Local Insights
Allegan is a small but growing community of 16,450 residents that sits within a larger West Michigan region serving a metro area of 2.5+ million. A steady 1.20% annual growth rate means ongoing demand for both renovations and new construction — more driveways, patios, garden projects, and small site work by homeowners and local contractors. The local climate, with 228 sunny days and 34.25 inches of rainfall a year in a hardiness zone of 8b, supports year-round outdoor projects but also drives specific material needs: reliable base materials for freeze-thaw cycles, erosion-control aggregates for rainy seasons, and quality topsoil or mulch for landscaping that thrives in this climate. For Allegan homeowners, having transparent access to bulk supplies like sand, dirt, stone, and organic products helps keep projects on schedule and performs better over time when materials match local conditions.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Price depends on the material, quantity, distance from the supplier, and local availability. Hello Gravel shows transparent pricing for gravel, sand, dirt, stone and other aggregates on the quote page—enter your zip code (49010) for an exact rate. Minimum orders and delivery fees may apply, and some areas have free delivery. For a firm price, get a live quote through the website or contact our team.
Most tri-axle dump trucks used on our platform carry roughly 10 to 12 cubic yards loose, but capacity varies by truck, material density, and local hauling rules. Heavier materials pack more densely and may reduce the loose-yard capacity, so check the product page or ask your Hello Gravel representative when ordering. We’ll confirm truck size and expected yards during scheduling.
Bulk materials are generally cheaper per cubic yard for medium and large projects because you pay less packaging and handling. Bagged products can be more convenient for small jobs, storage, or staged deliveries, but they usually cost more per unit. Compare total landed cost (material price plus delivery and handling) to decide which option makes sense for your project.
A full-size pickup bed may hold roughly one cubic yard of loose material, but the weight can exceed your truck’s payload capacity depending on the material. For safety, check your truck’s payload rating and the estimated tonnage of the material, or choose delivery by dump truck to avoid overloading. When in doubt, ask Hello Gravel for guidance based on the material you plan to move.
Bag sizes vary, so check the bag label for cubic feet. One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet, so divide 27 by the bag’s cubic-foot volume to get the number of bags needed. For example, if a 40 lb bag is listed as 0.5 cubic feet, you would need about 54 bags to equal one cubic yard.
Calculate volume by multiplying area by depth in feet, then divide by 27 to convert cubic feet to cubic yards. For a 20x20 slab at 4 inches (0.333 ft) thick: 20 x 20 x 0.333 = 132 cubic feet, which is about 4.9 cubic yards. Always add 5-10% extra for waste and compaction, and confirm whether your project needs a base layer or drainage material as well.
In Allegan's West Michigan climate, the best windows are late spring after the last frost and early fall when temperatures are cooler and moisture helps settle materials. Avoid spreading on frozen ground or during heavy rain when materials won’t settle properly. Summer applications work too, but plan for watering and avoid extremely hot, dry periods.
Standard delivery is typically 2+ business days from order, while next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. Actual timing depends on supplier stock, truck availability, and weather or seasonal demand. You can choose your preferred delivery date in checkout and we’ll confirm scheduling details by email or text.
Drivers may be able to perform tailgate spreading at their discretion if conditions and safety allow. You should request spreading at checkout and the driver will assess on arrival, but Hello Gravel does not guarantee spreading services. If spreading is critical, consider booking a dedicated spreading crew or arranging for a contractor.
Measure the area and determine the desired depth to calculate volume: area (sq ft) x depth (ft) ÷ 27 = cubic yards. Common depths are 2-4 inches for mulch and 4-6 inches for topsoil or planting mixes; adjust depth based on plant needs and drainage. Use Hello Gravel’s material calculator or contact our team for help if you’re unsure.
Because we source materials locally, texture and color will reflect Allegan and West Michigan geology and can vary from photos. Gravel, sand, dirt, stone and other natural aggregates have inherent variations, so photos are a guide rather than an exact match. You can note color preferences in order notes and contact customer service for any concerns before delivery.
Hello Gravel’s minimum order is 3 tons, and payments are processed securely through the website. We accept major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover), PayPal, and Apple Pay. Final pricing and payment options are shown at checkout before you confirm your order.
Contact Hello Gravel customer service as soon as possible if you need to change or cancel an order; modifications are easier before the supplier processes the job. We’ll do our best to accommodate requests, but changes can be limited once trucks are scheduled or materials are dispatched. Check your order confirmation for contact info and deadlines.
Some nearby municipalities, parks, or recycling centers occasionally offer free mulch or compost pickups, especially in spring and fall. Check Allegan city, county websites, or local public works pages for schedules and rules. If free material isn’t available or you need a specific product, Hello Gravel can deliver bulk materials to your site.
Delivery trucks are typically heavy tri-axle vehicles, so confirm that driveways, gates, and access points can accommodate weight and turning radius. Mark soft areas, low-hanging wires, or obstacles in order notes and pick a safe drop location to minimize risk of damage. The hauler will assess on arrival and may adjust placement or decline risky drops to maintain safety.
