Local Insights
Hersey (population 2,290) is a small but steadily growing community—its 1.20% annual growth rate points to ongoing demand for residential and light commercial projects such as driveway repairs, yard regrading, foundation backfill, and refreshed landscaping. Being part of the broader West Michigan market that serves a 2.5+ million metro area means homeowners have access to regional suppliers, but local conditions still drive material choices. With 228 sunny days a year and 34.25 inches of annual rainfall, projects must balance sun exposure, runoff management, and seasonal moisture. Hersey's hardiness zone of 8b also influences plant selection and erosion control strategies. For homeowners, that means selecting durable base materials, drainage-friendly soils, and UV-resistant surface options up front—using the right combination of gravel, dirt, sand, mulch, and stone reduces rework and helps projects last longer. Local climate and soil behavior affect material performance in practical ways: moderate rainfall increases the need for well-graded drainage layers and proper slopes, while frequent sun can accelerate color fading and surface wear. Materials that are prone to settling or compaction require attention to compaction techniques and allowance for settlement; permeable mixes help manage storm runoff and reduce erosion on sloped lots. For homeowners planning projects, this translates into evaluating particle size, compaction needs, and drainage solutions before ordering. Hello Gravel helps simplify that process by connecting you to local suppliers, offering calculators and guidance, and coordinating scheduled deliveries so you get materials that suit Hersey's conditions without guesswork.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Material prices vary by type and local supplier, so exact costs depend on the material and current local rates. Delivery, distance, and seasonality also affect the total price. The easiest way to get an accurate number is to enter your zip code and request a quote on our site.
Estimate material volumes, delivery fees, and labor separately: calculate how many tons or cubic yards you need, add delivery, and include any contractor or equipment costs. Permits, site prep, and compaction can add to the total, and seasonal conditions may affect labor rates. Request an itemized quote to compare material and delivery options for your address.
The number of 50 lb bags per cubic yard depends on material density and moisture content. As a general range expect roughly 40 to 60 bags of 50 lb material per cubic yard for common aggregates. For a precise conversion for your specific material, ask our team when you request a quote.
Yes, we have a minimum order (typically 3 tons) and many customers order by the ton or cubic yard. Truckload pricing depends on the truck type, load size, and distance to your property. During checkout you can see pricing tiers or contact our sales team for bulk or repeat-delivery discounts.
Standard delivery is typically 2 or more business days, with next-day delivery available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. Delivery fees depend on your zip code, access conditions, and whether you need a specific delivery window. Enter your zip code at checkout to see available dates and any delivery charges.
Yes, seasonal conditions in West Michigan can affect deliveries: frozen ground, snow, or wet conditions may limit access or require alternate placement. Some suppliers may add surcharges or schedule changes during extreme weather. We recommend ordering early in the season and confirming access details at checkout to avoid delays.
You can request an itemized quote that separates material costs, delivery fees, and any installation or equipment charges. Hello Gravel coordinates with local suppliers and haulers to provide clear pricing for each line item. For installation services beyond delivery, we can often help connect you with local contractors for a separate estimate.
Base, walkway, and grading needs depend on drainage, load, and appearance; choose a material with the right size and compaction for the task. In West Michigan's climate, drainage and frost heave are important considerations, so a well-draining, compactable material is often recommended. Use our material quiz or contact our experts to match gravel, sand, dirt, or stone to your project.
Pickup options depend on local supplier availability and may be offered in some areas. Drivers may perform tailgate spreading at their discretion, but this service is not guaranteed. For spreading or compaction beyond what a driver can safely do, we recommend renting a compactor or hiring a local contractor.
Volume pricing and repeat-customer discounts may be available depending on supplier and haul frequency in your area. Pricing programs vary by region, so contact our sales team to discuss multi-drop projects or ongoing deliveries across nearby zip codes. We can often create a custom solution for contractors or large residential projects.
Measure the length, width, and desired depth of the area, then convert to cubic yards or tons using a material calculator. Different materials have different densities, so use our online calculator or request help from our team for an accurate estimate. Ordering a little extra (about 5-10%) helps account for compaction and uneven surfaces.
Provide clear directions, preferred drop location, and note any gate codes or property access issues in the Order Notes at checkout. Make sure the drop area is accessible for a tri-axle dump truck and free of overhead obstacles, and confirm where to place the pile to avoid damage. If spreading is requested, note that drivers will assess safety and may not be able to spread material.
