Local Insights
Franklin (city population 14,480) sits within a growing West Michigan region whose metro area hosts 2.5+ million residents. A steady 1.20% annual growth rate means more homeowners are renovating, expanding outdoor living spaces, and investing in repairs—so demand for dependable bulk materials is consistent rather than boom-and-bust. Local climate and geography shape practical material choices: 228 sunny days and 34.25 inches of annual rainfall support active landscaping and longer planting seasons, while the region’s hardiness zone of 8b encourages a wide variety of plantings that require quality topsoil and mulch. At the same time, recurring rain and seasonal weather cycles increase the need for proper drainage aggregates, erosion-control fills, and durable surfacing for driveways and walkways. For Franklin homeowners, access to a range of bulk supplies—dirt, sand, gravel, mulch, and stone—helps turn property plans into lasting results that match local conditions and construction trends.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Start with the project's purpose: load-bearing surfaces need compactable, angular materials while garden beds and drainage areas may need looser, draining materials. Consider appearance, drainage needs, and how much maintenance you want. Because regional sourcing affects texture and color, use our material quiz or contact our team to match options to Franklin's climate and soils.
West Michigan sees freeze-thaw cycles and seasonal wetness that can cause shifting and settling if drainage or compaction is poor. Choose materials that promote drainage and proper compaction for surfaces you drive on, and avoid very fine materials in areas that must drain quickly. Expect some regional variation in color and texture due to local geology.
Calculate volume in cubic yards using: length (ft) x width (ft) x depth (ft) divided by 27, then convert to tons using the material's density or our online calculator. Depth depends on use: walking paths usually need less depth than driveways. If you prefer, use our material calculator or contact our team with project dimensions for a quick estimate.
Permit and HOA rules vary by municipality and neighborhood, so check with Franklin city offices and your homeowners association before starting work. Driveway changes, curb cuts, or work in the right-of-way commonly require permission. If you need help, we recommend confirming requirements early to avoid delays.
We connect you with local suppliers and contracted dump truck fleets that typically deliver by tri-axle truck. Standard delivery is 2+ business days, and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. Minimum orders start at 3 tons; schedule your preferred delivery date at checkout and confirm access details so drivers can place the load safely.
Drivers will do their best but placement depends on safe truck access, overhead wires, soft ground, and property slope, and spreading is offered only at the driver's discretion. Note any placement requests in the Order Notes and mark the drop zone on site. We cannot guarantee exact placement or spreading, so plan for some movement with wheelbarrows or mechanical assistance if precise positioning is required.
Because Hello Gravel sources materials regionally, color, grain size, and texture will reflect local geology and can vary from photos or samples. Natural materials like gravel, sand, dirt, and stone have inherent variation in appearance and consistency. If color or texture is critical, add preferences in Order Notes and contact our team for guidance before ordering.
Price depends on material type, quantity, delivery distance, site access, and seasonal demand. Special services like expedited delivery or requested spreading may add fees. We show clear pricing and available delivery options in checkout—get an online quote or contact our team for project-specific pricing.
Spring through fall is generally easiest because frozen or saturated ground can limit truck access and make spreading harder. Winter deliveries are possible but may face delays, extra fees, or restrictions due to frozen ground or snow removal needs. Plan ahead for busy seasons and request a delivery window when you order.
Yes—contractors can use our platform for bulk ordering, scheduled deliveries, and local supplier coordination. For large or recurring needs, contact our sales team to discuss volume, timing, and logistics so we can match you with the right suppliers and fleets. We handle coordination end-to-end while you manage the site work.
Clear the intended drop zone of vehicles and obstacles, mark property lines and any underground utilities, and ensure safe truck access without low-hanging wires or tight turns. Communicate special instructions in Order Notes and confirm a contact phone number for the driver. Proper preparation speeds delivery and reduces the chance of placement issues.
Contact our customer team as soon as possible—changes are easiest to accommodate before your order is processed or dispatched. We will do our best to modify or cancel orders, but ability to change depends on supplier and trucking schedules. See our order terms or reach out for help with specific requests.
