Local Insights
Bloomfield Hills is a community of 47,455 residents that sits within a larger regional market of 2.5+ million people — a scale that supports steady residential investment. A 1.20% annual growth rate signals consistent demand for home upgrades, additions, and yard improvements rather than a one-time building boom; that steady expansion means homeowners increasingly need reliable access to bulk materials for driveways, drainage upgrades, garden beds, and outdoor living spaces. With about 228 sunny days and 34.25 inches of annual rainfall in the region, materials must perform through both wet seasons and long dry stretches. In practical terms, that pushes projects toward products that balance drainage, compaction resistance, and plant-supporting soils. Whether you need topsoil amendments for beds, durable base layers for pavers, or stable fill for grading, sourcing quality bulk materials suited to local geology helps avoid rework and extends the life of landscape and construction work.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Start by defining the project: load-bearing driveways need more stable aggregates while decorative areas prioritize appearance. Consider drainage, maintenance, and local climate when comparing options, and remember that regional sourcing means gravel, sand, dirt, stone may vary in color and texture. Use our material calculator or contact our team for guidance based on your project size and expected traffic.
Choose permeable, angular materials and ensure a proper base and slope to promote runoff away from structures. Combine good material selection with proper grading and, when appropriate, geotextile fabric or retaining features to reduce erosion. In Michigan's freeze-thaw conditions, allow for seasonally higher runoff and inspect slopes after spring thaw.
Michigan winters bring freeze-thaw cycles and snow, so avoid scheduling major installs during frozen ground or heavy snow periods when possible. Wet springs can make delivery and compaction more difficult, so plan heavy deliveries for drier months or ask about temporary access solutions. For projects exposed to plows or winter salt, choose materials and grades that tolerate freeze-thaw and require less frequent replenishing.
Measure the length and width of the area, decide on the desired depth in inches, and multiply to get cubic feet, then convert to cubic yards and tons. Our website has a material calculator to do the math for you and provides estimates across common materials like gravel, sand, dirt, stone. Keep in mind our minimum order is 3 tons, so round up if your calculation is close to that limit.
Price depends on the material type, local availability, distance from the supplier, and quantity ordered, plus any special requests like next-day delivery or spreading. Hello Gravel shows transparent pricing before checkout and many areas have free delivery; check your zip code for exact rates and get a quote to see itemized costs. Seasonal demand and regional sourcing can also influence price.
Standard delivery typically requires 2+ business days from order and confirmation, while next-day delivery may be available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. Deliveries are made by contracted haul fleets using dump trucks (commonly tri-axle) and you can select a preferred delivery date during checkout. Expect a confirmation call or text from the local hauler with more specific timing.
Some drivers can perform tailgate spreading at their discretion, and you can request this service at checkout, but it is not guaranteed and will be assessed for safety and access upon arrival. For precise placement or extensive spreading, plan for a separate spreading crew or equipment. Provide clear access instructions and photos when possible to help the driver assess feasibility.
Because Hello Gravel sources materials locally, the color, size, and texture of gravel, sand, dirt, stone can vary based on regional geology and recent screenings. Photos are representative; natural variation is expected and we recommend adding color or texture preferences in the Order Notes. If the delivered material raises concerns, contact customer service promptly so we can help resolve the issue.
Contact our team as soon as possible—changes are easier to accommodate before the order is processed or dispatched. We will do our best to modify orders but ability to change depends on supplier and truck scheduling. If there is an issue after delivery, reach out to customer service and we will work to find a satisfactory resolution.
Local rules and HOA guidelines can restrict visible driveways, front-yard materials, or wall and edging types, so check your HOA covenants and the City of Bloomfield Hills ordinances before ordering. Some projects like new driveways or significant grading may require permits or soil erosion controls. If you are unsure, consult your HOA or city building department to confirm requirements before you buy.
Maintenance depends on material and use: areas with vehicle traffic may need occasional regrading and fresh material, while decorative areas might require weed control and infrequent topping up. In Michigan, freeze-thaw cycles and winter snow removal can shift materials, so expect seasonal maintenance after winter. Choose materials and installation methods that match the amount of upkeep you want to perform.
Contractors can place larger orders, schedule multiple deliveries, and set up account-level billing through our platform to streamline project logistics. Provide detailed drop-off instructions, jobsite access times, and staging locations in the order notes to help haulers plan. For ongoing projects, contact our team to discuss volume pricing, delivery windows, and any special handling requirements.
