Local Insights
Alger has a population of 2,630 and sits within a rapidly evolving West Michigan metro that supports growing residential demand. A steady annual growth rate of 1.20% means more driveways, patios, garden projects, and small-scale construction as homeowners update properties or add new features. The local climate — about 228 sunny days and 34.25 inches of rainfall annually in a hardiness zone of 8b — favors outdoor living but also requires thoughtful material choices. Homeowners in Alger need durable base materials for driveways and patios, well-draining mixes for beds and swales, and stable fill for grading. Because projects range from lawn restoration to structural grading, reliable access to a range of materials (gravel, sand, dirt, mulch, and stone) that reflect local geology makes installations last longer and perform better under seasonal cycles.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Pricing usually includes the cost of material, local supplier rates, and delivery. In small West Michigan towns, regional availability and truck distance affect price, and many orders have a minimum (Hello Gravel requires 3 tons). For an exact price, request a quote through the website to see upfront costs and any delivery fees.
Choose materials that drain well and lock together when compacted to resist freeze-thaw heave. Proper base preparation, good drainage, and a layered approach improve performance for most materials; talk with our team about options that balance stability and maintenance for your site.
Standard delivery is generally 2+ business days, with next-day available for orders placed early (additional fee may apply). Hello Gravel has a minimum order of 3 tons and coordinates deliveries with local haulers; you can pick a preferred delivery date during checkout.
Late spring through early fall is usually best for installation because ground is firmer and drier, but many deliveries occur year-round. Expect slower scheduling and possible access issues in muddy or frozen conditions; allow extra lead time during spring thaw and busy summer months.
Soils with more clay hold water and may need better drainage and coarser base materials, while sandy soils drain readily but may require more compaction. Consider a soil test or local contractor advice; selecting a material that complements your native soil will reduce settling and drainage problems.
Permit requirements vary by township, county, and whether you connect to a public road. Check with Alger Township and the local road commission before starting work; Hello Gravel can deliver materials but does not handle permits or municipal approvals.
A 2-car driveway (about 20 ft by 20 ft) at a 4-inch depth needs roughly 5 cubic yards, which typically equals about 6–8 tons depending on the material. For planting beds, measure area and desired depth (in inches), convert to cubic yards (area x depth / 27), then round up to allow for compaction and waste.
Bulk delivery is usually more cost-effective for projects needing several cubic yards because of lower per-unit pricing and convenient truck delivery. Bags are simpler for very small jobs, tight access, or when you only need a few shovels worth, but they cost more per cubic yard and may require extra handling.
Drivers will place loads where safe and accessible, but exact placement depends on truck access and site conditions. Tailgate spreading can be requested at checkout and may be done at the driver's discretion; Hello Gravel does not guarantee spreading services.
Use our online material calculator or aggregate quiz to estimate cubic yards and tons for your project, then round up for waste and compaction. If you need help, contact our sales team with project dimensions and site photos for personalized guidance before placing your order.
Natural aggregates vary by region, so texture, color, and stone size can differ from photos. If you have a specific look in mind, add notes to your order and contact customer service; we will work with local suppliers to match preferences when possible, but exact matches cannot be guaranteed.
Clear vegetation, mark utilities, create a stable access path for the truck, and grade or compact the subgrade as needed before delivery. For structural projects, consider using geotextile fabric and a compactible base layer; ask our team for site-prep tips based on your planned use.
