Local Insights
Solon is a small Maine community with a city population of 900 located in the North Augusta, West Maine metro area of 603,000. With a steady growth rate of 0.50% annually, construction and landscaping demand is gradual and predictable—favoring routine improvements like driveway maintenance, drainage upgrades, garden expansions, and small-scale outdoor projects rather than rapid development booms. The local climate—hardiness zone 7b with 47.00 inches of annual rainfall and 215 sunny days per year—creates a need for materials that manage moisture while remaining workable across seasons. Homeowners benefit from quality bulk supplies such as well-graded aggregates, stable topsoils, permeable mixes, and erosion-control products that perform reliably in wet, temperate conditions and support both planting and light construction tasks. High rainfall, moderate sun, and a 7b growing zone create specific performance requirements for materials: drainage, compaction stability, and resistance to erosion. Soils that hold excess moisture can shift under load, while materials designed for good drainage reduce pooling and long-term settling. For homeowners, this means planning for proper base layers, slightly higher material allowances for compaction, and choosing regionally sourced aggregates that reflect local geology. Hello Gravel helps Solon residents by connecting them to local suppliers familiar with these conditions, providing quantity calculators and scheduling deliveries so projects use the right materials at the right time for local weather and soil realities.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Delivery prices depend on material type, the amount ordered, and distance from the supplier. Quotes also factor in access conditions (driveway length, tight turns, overhead clearance) and optional services like next-day delivery or spreading. Hello Gravel shows upfront pricing when you enter your zip code and minimum orders typically start at 3 tons; additional rural or access fees may apply.
Price per ton is based on weight and price per cubic yard is based on volume; different materials have different densities so the numbers are not interchangeable. A good rule of thumb for mixed aggregates in the Solon area is about 1.3–1.6 tons per cubic yard (use 1.4 tons/yd3 as a working estimate). For an exact conversion get the supplier's density or request both unit prices in your quote.
Calculate cubic yards with: (width in ft x length in ft x depth in inches) / 324. Multiply cubic yards by 1.4 (approximate) to estimate tons. For example, a 12-foot-wide, 100-foot-long driveway at 2 inches deep needs about 7.4 cubic yards (≈10.4 tons) and at 3 inches deep about 11.1 cubic yards (≈15.5 tons).
Dump trucks vary, but common local dump trucks carry roughly 10–16 cubic yards per load; capacity in tons depends on material density and truck configuration. A full truckload price is usually quoted per truck or per ton/yard and will reflect the exact truck size used for your delivery. Ask your Hello Gravel quote what truck type will be used and how many yards or tons that truck will deliver.
Yes—10-yard loads are a common option and are often delivered by standard dump trucks. Standard delivery timeframes are 2+ business days, with next-day delivery available for orders placed before noon CST for an added fee; availability in Solon depends on local supplier schedules. Confirm any rural or access surcharges when you request your quote.
Hello Gravel’s minimum order is typically 3 tons, which helps cover supplier and trucking costs in rural areas. Some local suppliers may accept smaller drops but often charge a small-order fee or delivery surcharge. If you need less than the minimum, consider pooling with a neighbor, increasing the order to meet the minimum, or asking about smaller bags or contractor leftovers from local suppliers.
Choose materials based on the job: drainage and erosion control, compaction and load-bearing, final appearance, and how the local climate (freeze-thaw) will affect performance. Because materials are regionally sourced, color and texture can vary—ask for local product descriptions or photos and note preferences in your order. Contact our sales team for help matching material properties to your specific project needs.
Drivers may be able to perform tailgate spreading at their discretion if site conditions allow; you can request this service at checkout but it is not guaranteed. For many projects, a separate spreading and compaction step is important for proper performance, so plan to either do it yourself or hire local labor and a compactor. If compaction is needed, include labor and equipment in your project estimate.
Yes, suppliers and haulers may apply extra fees for difficult access, very long drops from the truck, steep or narrow driveways, or other safety challenges. These conditions can also affect whether tailgate spreading is possible and what truck type can be used. Provide photos and site notes when you order so your quote can reflect any special access needs.
A clear estimate should list the material type (gravel, sand, dirt, stone), quantity in both cubic yards and tons, unit price, delivery fee, scheduled delivery date, truck type, and dump location instructions. If applicable, include spreading and compaction labor, site preparation, permit or site fees, small-order surcharges, and contact information for the supplier and Hello Gravel. Always confirm payment methods, cancellation policy, and any contingencies for weather or access.
