Local Insights
Madison has a city population of 3,650 and sits within a broader metro area of 603,000, and its growth rate of 0.50% annually points to steady, incremental demand for home upgrades and small-scale construction projects rather than a boom economy. That steady growth means homeowners are more likely to invest in durable, long-term solutions—driveway rebuilding, drainage improvements, garden beds, and modest additions—so material choices that combine longevity and low maintenance matter. With an annual rainfall of 47.00 inches, 215 sunny days per year, and location in hardiness zone 7b, local projects need materials that handle both wet periods and warm growing seasons. Quality bulk materials—gravel, sand, dirt, mulch, and stone—help control drainage, prevent erosion, and support plantings adapted to local conditions. Choosing the right grade and source affects how a driveway sheds water, how a foundation drains, and how landscapes establish over the first critical seasons.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Pick a material based on traffic, drainage, and maintenance needs. For most driveways in Madison’s climate, look for well-graded, stable aggregates that compact well; think in terms of the group gravel, sand, dirt, stone rather than a single product. Ask about recommended depth for your use (parking vs. frequent heavy loads) and confirm local supplier options with our team.
Materials that drain well and resist movement under freeze-thaw conditions work best. Choose aggregates that shed water and compact to a stable surface, and combine them with a proper base and slope to prevent ponding. Regular maintenance and good drainage matter as much as the material choice.
Hello Gravel has a minimum order of 3 tons, and standard delivery generally requires 2+ business days. Next-day delivery is an option for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee, though rural addresses or difficult access can add time. Contact our team early to confirm scheduling for remote locations.
Measure length and width in feet and depth in inches, then use this formula: cubic yards = (length x width x depth_in_inches) / 324. For example, 100 ft x 10 ft at 3 in depth uses about 9.3 cubic yards. Add 5-15% extra for compaction and waste depending on the material and job conditions, or use our online material calculator for a precise estimate.
Local rules vary, so check with the Madison town office or your road commissioner for weight limits, oversized loads, or work-in-right-of-way permits. Also check HOA rules or any private road agreements that affect large deliveries. Let us know about any restrictions when you order so we can coordinate with the hauler.
Late spring through early fall is usually ideal in Madison because ground frost and wet conditions are less likely to interfere. Summer offers the most predictable conditions for compaction and curing. Deliveries can still be scheduled outside that window, but expect more weather-related delays in winter and during thaw periods.
Surfaces that compact firmly and provide traction tend to be easiest for snow removal and long-term winter use. Select materials that resist scattering under plows and provide a firm edge for shovels or blades, and make sure the finished surface has good slope and drainage. Routine regrading or top-up may be needed each spring for loose surfaces.
Contracted drivers may offer tailgate spreading at their discretion if it can be done safely, but that service is not guaranteed. Full spreading and compaction are typically separate contractor services and should be arranged in advance if required. Request spreading at checkout and confirm capabilities with our team before delivery.
Clear a turning and drop area, remove low-hanging wires or branches, and mark the preferred placement zone with flags or stakes. Consider access width, driveway strength, and whether ground protection (plywood or mats) is needed to avoid lawn damage. Provide gate codes or contact info and confirm any site constraints when you place your order.
Pricing depends on material type, local availability, haul distance, and seasonality, so exact ranges vary. Hello Gravel provides transparent pricing at checkout and may offer volume discounts for large orders—contact sales for customized quotes. We accept major credit cards, PayPal, and Apple Pay; contractor billing or payment plans may be available through direct discussion with our team.
Materials reflect regional geology and can vary in color, texture, and size from photos or samples. This natural variation is normal for gravel, sand, dirt, stone and can affect appearance and some performance characteristics. If color or texture is important, add notes to your order and contact our team to discuss local options before purchasing.
Contact our customer service team as soon as possible—changes are easiest before the order is dispatched. We will work to accommodate requests and resolve delivery or quality issues promptly, but some modifications may not be possible once trucks are en route. See our refund policy for more details and reach out if anything goes wrong.
