Local Insights
Hays homeowners live in a city with a population of 19,580 and are part of a broader region with a metro area population of 2.5+ million. That measured growth—around 0.40% annually—points to steady, predictable demand for home improvements and modest new construction rather than boom-level expansion. With 228 sunny days per year and an annual rainfall of 34.25 inches in hardiness zone 8b, local projects must balance sun exposure and periodic moisture: durable surface materials, good drainage layers, and erosion-resistant backfill become practical priorities. Home landscaping trends here lean toward low-maintenance yards, defined access routes, and irrigation-aware planting beds, while modest construction projects focus on longevity and low upkeep. For these reasons, sourcing consistent, well-graded bulk materials—dirt, sand, stone, and mulches—matters: the right blend reduces future maintenance, improves water management, and supports plant health in Hays’s climate and growth context.

While I cannot speak to the actual service, I did enter my phone number to get a quote. I realized it was probably too much for my small project. But I received a very helpful follow up text conversation, and after I explained it was probably more than I needed, they still took time to help me work through how much I would need, and offered me possible solutions, even knowing I wouldn't be using their product. Makes me wish they had fit my needs, if that's the level of service they provided even to a non customers

Just a little hiccup in the delivery date but everything worked out well and with great communication from Janel. Ordering went smoothly as well as working with the delivery team to deliver to the appropriate location for my yard.

Consider local climate and soil: Hays is in West Kansas with hot summers, cold winters, and variable soils that affect drainage and settling. Choose materials that handle freeze-thaw cycles and local runoff, and expect color and texture to vary because materials are regionally sourced. Also factor in delivery access, driveway strength for dump trucks, and any slope or drainage needs on your site.
Hello Gravel generally requires a 3-ton minimum and uses local dump trucks for delivery, with standard delivery taking 2+ business days. Next-day delivery is often available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee, and many areas offer free delivery. Drivers may offer tailgate spreading at their discretion when requested at checkout, but spreading is not guaranteed.
Measure the surface area (feet) and desired depth (inches), then use this formula: cubic yards = (area in ft2 x depth in inches) / 324. To estimate tons, multiply cubic yards by an approximate density range of 1.1 to 1.6 tons per cubic yard depending on the material; use our online material calculator or contact our team for a more precise estimate. For example, a 1-car driveway (12' x 50') at 4u0022 depth is about 7.4 cubic yards, roughly 8–12 tons.
Spring through early fall is generally best for delivery and installation, when ground is not frozen and access is easier. Avoid scheduling right after heavy rains or during freeze-thaw periods to reduce compaction and washout risks. If you need materials in winter, plan ahead and expect slower scheduling and potential weather-related delays.
Permit and HOA requirements vary by neighborhood and project type; small landscape deliveries often do not need a city permit, but larger grading or construction projects may require permits from the City of Hays or Ellis County. Always check with your HOA and local permitting office before ordering to confirm setback, drainage, or cover requirements. If in doubt, contact our team and we can suggest next steps and point you to local resources.
Local soils in West Kansas can range from clay to sandy loam and will affect drainage and compaction; materials that allow water to pass through help reduce pooling and frost heave. Hot, dry summers can cause loose fines to become dusty, while freeze-thaw cycles can shift base layers if they are not well compacted. Plan for proper base preparation, compaction, and drainage to maximize the lifespan of any surface.
Ensure your driveway or drop area can support a tri-axle dump truck and clear any low-hanging branches or obstructions before delivery. Mark the preferred drop location in Order Notes and choose a delivery date when access is easiest to avoid re-handling materials. If you need spreading or placement help, request it at checkout but know the driver will assess safety and ability on arrival.
