Pond Sand

Pond sand is fine, clean sand you spread under a pond liner or use as a soft bottom in a small pond. The grains are rounded and small, usually about 0.15 to 0.5 mm across, which puts it in the fine-to-medium sand range. It cushions the liner so a sharp root or rock underneath can't poke through and start a leak.

Pond sand is a use name, not a spec grade. Suppliers screen it by feel rather than by an ASTM number, so what you get can vary from pit to pit. Washed mason sand or filter sand usually works if a yard doesn't stock it under the pond label. It weighs about 1.35 tons per cubic yard, so one load covers a lot of pond floor.
