Concrete Aggregate
Concrete Aggregate Gravel
Concrete aggregate gravel is washed, rounded rock sized to mix into concrete. The stones come from riverbeds or gravel pits, so they're smooth and egg-shaped instead of sharp. Washing rinses out silt and fines so the rock bonds clean with cement paste. You'll see it sold by grade numbers like #57 or #89, following the ASTM C33 spec that concrete plants use.
The name tells you the rock is graded for use in concrete. Any hard, clean stone that meets the spec qualifies, and most of what you'll see around here is washed river gravel. The grade number (57, 67, 89) is a screen size from ASTM D448 that says how big the pieces run. A #57 is roughly 1 inch down to 1/4 inch. A #89 is 3/8 inch down to fines. It usually runs a few dollars more per ton than the same rock sold unwashed, because of the extra step at the plant.

How to choose within concrete aggregate gravel
Match the mix design
Batch plants and ready-mix trucks work to a spec. Confirm the size and gradation the plant is running before you order.
Coarse vs. fine
Coarse aggregate gives the mix its strength; fine aggregate fills the gaps. A slab needs both — usually delivered separately and blended at the plant.
Cleanliness matters
Fines and clay contamination weaken the cure. If a load looks dusty, ask for a wash spec sheet before you take delivery.
