Concrete Aggregate

Concrete Aggregate 1 Stone

#1 stone is one of the biggest sizes of clean crushed rock you can buy, with pieces roughly 1 1/2 to 4 inches across. It's angular, since it's rock that's been run through a crusher and screened to keep the big chunks and drop out the fines. Because the pieces are so large, a pile of #1 holds a lot of open space between the rocks. That's what makes it drain fast and lock in place under heavy loads.

The 1 comes from ASTM D448, a size chart that numbers coarse rock from #1 (biggest) down to #10 (smallest). The number tells you the size and says nothing about what kind of rock it is, so #1 might be limestone, granite, or trap rock depending on the pit. It's a specialty size, not a driveway grade, so it usually costs more per ton than common stones like #57. You'll pay a bit extra for the extra screening and the bigger crusher pass.

How to choose within concrete aggregate 1 stone

Match the mix design

Batch plants and ready-mix trucks work to a spec. Confirm the size and gradation the plant is running before you order.

Coarse vs. fine

Coarse aggregate gives the mix its strength; fine aggregate fills the gaps. A slab needs both — usually delivered separately and blended at the plant.

Cleanliness matters

Fines and clay contamination weaken the cure. If a load looks dusty, ask for a wash spec sheet before you take delivery.
