Decomposed Granite
Known for its natural look, this compact, durable material drains well and holds up in high-traffic areas. Made from crushed and weathered granite down to a mix of fine gravel and sand—best for patios, paths, driveways, and landscape projects. Can range in color from light brown and tan to reddish and gray, depending on the natural stone color in the region.
Road Base
(Class 5 | ABC | Crusher Run) A mixture of crushed limestone or granite, gravel, and sand, ranging from 1 ½” in size down to fines (small particles). Commonly used for constructing roads, driveway bases, parking lots, and other paved and unpaved surfaces. Intended to be compacted, hence the inclusion of fines within the material to provide support and be resistant to erosion and shifting.

Why San Francisco Homeowners Choose Hello Gravel
San Francisco (city population 728,987) sits inside the San Francisco-Oakland metro area (2.7+ million) and combines dense urban fabric with constrained geography. The region's modest growth rate of 0.40% annually, 228 sunny days per year, and average annual rainfall of 34.25 inches create a climate where smart, durable landscaping and drainage solutions matter. Homeowners and contractors in the city are frequently updating yards, driveways, and terraces to handle runoff, improve curb appeal, and reduce maintenance on small urban plots. That steady demand for practical materials makes quality aggregates like gravel essential: they offer reliable drainage, low upkeep, and flexible design options that work with San Francisco's hills, compact lots, and high-value real estate market.Popular Projects in San Francisco This Season

Frequently Asked Questions - San Francisco gravel Delivery
Everything you need to know about gravel delivery in San Francisco.
A full tri-axle dump truck (roughly 10-12 cubic yards or about 12-17 tons) delivered to San Francisco usually costs in the range of $800 to $1,400 for common gravels, depending on material type, local supply, and site access. Hello Gravel has a 3-ton minimum, so smaller orders are priced proportionally and may include delivery fees; exact pricing is shown at checkout and varies by supplier and neighborhood.
For a 20-foot long driveway, a common single-car width is about 10 feet (200 sq ft). At 2 inches deep you need about 1.2 cubic yards (≈1.7 tons), at 3 inches about 1.85 yd3 (≈2.6 tons), and at 4 inches about 2.47 yd3 (≈3.5 tons). Because Hello Gravel requires a 3-ton minimum, plan to order at least 3 tons for that project; delivery costs may be free in many areas but can vary with access, time, and truck size and will be shown at checkout.
A 50 lb bag of gravel is roughly 0.018 cubic yards and will cover about 6 sq ft at a 1-inch depth (about 3 sq ft at 2 inches). Bulk delivery becomes the better option for projects that need more than a few dozen bags (usually over 1/2 cubic yard or roughly 30 bags) because the cost per ton is much lower and delivery saves time, parking hassles, and manual labor in San Francisco.
Two inches of gravel is usually too thin for a driveway that will see regular vehicle use in San Francisco. We recommend a compacted base of 3 to 4 inches of crushed stone (or 4 to 8 inches if you need structural support), plus a 1-2 inch wearing layer; deeper bases help with drainage and stability on San Francisco's hilly terrain and in wet seasons.
For a durable driveway, use a crushed stone base like 3/4" minus or crusher-run for compaction and a 3/8" to 1/2" washed rock or pea gravel for the surface. Crushed stone with fines locks together better on slopes and under traffic, while washed decorative gravel drains well and resists compaction; choose materials that suit your slope, desired look, and local climate effects like rain and coastal salt.
Buying gravel in bulk (tonnage delivered) is usually the cheapest per ton when you need multiple tons, while bagged gravel is more expensive per ton but convenient for very small jobs. Pickup can save on delivery if you have a suitable truck and no parking restrictions, but in San Francisco bulk delivery often wins for convenience and labor savings when you factor in parking, unloading, and time.
For 1,000 sq ft, at 2 inches deep you need about 6.17 cubic yards (≈8.6 tons); at 3 inches about 9.26 yd3 (≈13.0 tons); and at 4 inches about 12.35 yd3 (≈17.3 tons). Choose depth based on use: 2 inches for a decorative top dressing, 3-4 inches for walkways or light-use areas, and order with Hello Gravel's 3-ton minimum in mind.
Twenty tons is roughly 14.3 cubic yards. Spread at 2 inches this covers about 2,315 sq ft; at 3 inches about 1,543 sq ft; and at 4 inches about 1,157 sq ft. These estimates help with planning for driveways, terraces, or large landscaping beds on San Francisco properties.
A gravel driveway's lifespan depends on traffic, slope, and maintenance: you can expect to top up high-traffic areas every 1-3 years and plan for a more thorough refresh or regrading every 7-15 years. In San Francisco, hill runoff, erosion, and concentrated turning zones accelerate wear, so periodic raking, adding fresh material, and addressing drainage will extend life.
A 7x14 dump trailer typically carries about 4 to 7 cubic yards depending on sidewall height and load configuration (roughly 5-10 tons depending on material). For small jobs and if you have a heavy-duty trailer and easy parking, pickup can work, but for San Francisco properties delivery is often simpler because it avoids loading, transport permits, street access problems, and heavy lifting.
Plan for where the truck can safely pull up and dump, check for overhead wires, parked cars, and narrow streets, and add order notes if you need the pile placed away from the curb. Hello Gravel offers scheduled delivery (standard 2+ business days or next-day in some cases) and tailgate spreading may be available at the driver's discretion; always check local parking rules and HOA requirements before delivery.
As of today, we require 2 business days for delivery.
