Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. Compost is 100% compost, a concentrated amendment you mix into soil you already have. Compost Soil is a blend of topsoil and compost that's ready to plant in. Pick Compost to improve existing beds and lawns. Pick Compost Soil to fill new beds.

It's not a good idea. Straight compost is too rich and too loose for most plants on its own, and it settles a lot as it breaks down. Mix it with your existing soil, or order Compost Soil if you need a ready-made planting mix.

Yes. Rake a 1/4 to 1/2 inch layer over the grass, ideally after aerating, so it settles down around the roots. It's a common way to build up thin or compacted lawns.

Finished compost has an earthy smell, like a forest floor. A strong sour or ammonia smell means compost isn't finished. The smell fades within a day or two of spreading.
