Crushed angular rock locks together and compacts better than rounded river rock. For driveways, a 3/4″ crushed rock base with a finer wearing surface is common.
Use this quick formula: cubic yards needed = (area in sq ft x depth in inches) / 324. Then multiply cubic yards by the local tons-per-yard factor (about 1.4 tons per cubic yard for typical crushed gravel) if you need tons.
