Local Insights
St. Croix County sits within the Wisconsin Region and is connected to a local city population of 100 and a metro area population of 2.6+ million, a context that helps explain rising demand for home improvement and infrastructure work. A steady growth rate of 2.50% annually signals ongoing residential expansion and renovation: more driveways, patios, garden projects, and small-scale site work as homeowners update properties or prepare lots for development. Local climate and geography — 228 sunny days per year, 33.50 inches of annual rainfall, and hardiness zone 8b — mean materials must handle both sun exposure and periodic heavy rain. That creates broad demand across many material types: stable aggregates for structural bases, well-draining soils and sands for grading, erosion-control mixes for slopes, and organic materials for planting and moisture retention. Predictable access to quality bulk materials helps homeowners plan seasonal projects with confidence.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

It depends on traffic, budget, and drainage needs; common projects use a mix of materials (gravel, sand, dirt, and stone) layered for strength. For driveways, choose a material that compacts well and sheds water, and plan for a stable base and proper grading to handle freeze-thaw cycles. If you are unsure, use our aggregate quiz or contact our team for guidance based on local conditions.
Price depends on material type, distance from the supplier, order size, access difficulty, and seasonal demand rather than a fixed per-ton number. Hello Gravel provides transparent, zip-code-based quotes so you can see delivery and material costs up front. Request a quote online to get an exact price for your address and planned quantity.
Choose well-draining, angular materials and a properly compacted base to minimize frost heave and salt-related deterioration; material performance is influenced by gradation and how it is installed. Using layers that promote drainage, adding a geotextile where appropriate, and avoiding high-organic soils will improve longevity through freeze-thaw cycles. Our sales team can recommend options from local suppliers that reflect area geology and winter conditions.
You may need permits or approvals for large fills, shoreline work, or projects that affect drainage, wetlands, or public right-of-way; rules vary by township and county. Contact St. Croix County zoning, local townships, or the county land conservation office before ordering large volumes. When in doubt, check with local authorities so your delivery and placement comply with regulations.
Many local suppliers and haulers serve rural and lakeside properties, but delivery depends on safe truck access, road weight limits, and parking/turnaround space. Drivers will assess site conditions on arrival and may decline or charge extra for difficult access; orders have a 3-ton minimum and are typically delivered by tri-axle dump trucks. If you have tight access or special placement needs, note that in your order and contact our team to discuss options.
Calculate area (length x width) and decide on desired depth in feet, then multiply area by depth and divide by 27 to get cubic yards. Convert cubic yards to tons using the material-specific density (our material calculator can do this for gravel, sand, dirt, and stone). For complex sites or slopes, send photos or ask our team for help to avoid underordering or excess waste.
Some suppliers or contractors may offer spreading, leveling, and compaction as an add-on, but this varies by hauler and is not guaranteed as part of standard delivery. You can request tailgate spreading at checkout, but the driver will assess whether it can be done safely and may decline. For reliable grading or compaction, consider booking a local contractor separately or ask us to help coordinate additional services.
Well-draining aggregates combined with geotextile fabric, retaining features, terraces, and vegetation often give the best erosion control on slopes. Placing coarser material at the base and using finer material where vegetation will establish helps stabilize soil while allowing water to pass. Local suppliers can recommend material gradation and installation tips suited to the county's soils and rainfall patterns.
Late spring through early fall is typically the best time for deliveries and installation because ground is unfrozen and access is easier; early spring can be muddy and winter deliveries are limited. Schedule projects with some lead time to avoid high-demand windows, and plan around local weather forecasts to reduce the risk of delays. If you need faster timing, ask about our next-day delivery option for orders placed before noon CST.
Standard delivery lead time is 2+ business days, while next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. Seasonal demand, supplier inventory, and site access issues can increase lead times, so check availability for your zip code when ordering. We confirm delivery windows and any special access requirements before dispatch.
Natural materials reflect local geology, so texture and color can vary; we note this regional variation on product pages. If a material differs significantly from your expectations, contact our customer service promptly and include photos so we can help resolve the issue. Review our policies and work with the team to find a satisfactory solution.
