Local Insights
Montello is a community of 5,390 residents experiencing steady expansion—regional patterns show a 1.20% annual growth rate—so local renovation, infill, and small-scale construction projects are increasingly common. Being part of a larger metro region of 2.5+ million people also means access to broader supplier networks and growing demand for materials. The area’s climate and growing season—about 228 sunny days per year, 34.25 inches of annual rainfall, and a hardiness zone of 8b—creates long, predictable windows for outdoor work but also requires materials that perform under both sun exposure and periodic moisture. Homeowners planning yards, driveways, grading, or drainage upgrades need reliable bulk supplies and deliveries that reflect these local conditions.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Consider the project's purpose first: load-bearing surfaces need crushed and stable material, while planting beds or top dressing benefit from looser materials. Think about drainage, appearance, and how the material compacts over time. Because regional sourcing affects texture and color, use the Hello Gravel aggregate quiz or contact our team for local recommendations.
Homeowners and contractors in Montello often order materials for driveways, patios, walkways, drainage swales, yard grading, garden beds, and erosion control. Larger jobs include backfill for foundations and road repair. Most materials—gravel, sand, dirt, stone—can serve multiple uses depending on specification and installation.
Montello’s freeze–thaw cycles and snowy winters make drainage and frost resistance important factors when choosing materials. For areas prone to frost heave choose materials that drain well and compact reliably. Expect local suppliers to source materials that reflect West Wisconsin geology, so check suitability for snow plowing and seasonal runoff.
Measure length, width, and desired depth in feet, multiply length x width x depth, then divide by 27 to get cubic yards. Convert cubic yards to tons using a rough range of 1.2 to 1.6 tons per cubic yard depending on the material. Keep in mind Hello Gravel’s minimum order is 3 tons and use our online calculator for a more accurate estimate.
Standard delivery is usually 2+ business days after ordering, and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. You can pick a preferred delivery date during checkout, but weather and rural logistics can affect timing. We confirm scheduling and keep you informed through the order process.
Yes. Rural deliveries may be affected by narrow roads, low-hanging wires, soft driveways, and limited turnaround space for tri-axle dump trucks. Provide clear delivery notes and photos at checkout so the hauler can assess access and avoid delays. Some locations may incur additional fees or require a different drop point.
Drivers may be able to perform tailgate spreading at their discretion, but this service is not guaranteed. Request spreading at checkout and the driver will assess safety and feasibility on arrival. For precise spreading or shaping, hiring a local landscaper is recommended.
Delivery cost depends on material type, quantity, and distance from the supplier. Hello Gravel shows transparent pricing during checkout so you can compare per-ton or per-yard costs and any delivery fees. For an exact figure, enter your zip code (Montello is 53949) and get an instant quote.
Spring through fall is ideal for most landscaping and driveway projects because ground conditions are easier to work with and weather is more predictable. Winter deliveries are possible but can be complicated by snow, frozen ground, and limited spreading options. Plan projects around local freeze–thaw patterns and allow extra time in shoulder seasons.
Small landscaping jobs often do not require permits, but larger projects—like driveways that change drainage or structures that need a foundation—may need city or county permits. If you belong to an HOA, check any design guidelines before ordering materials. When in doubt, contact Montello city offices or your county building department for requirements.
Natural materials vary by region, so texture and color may differ from online photos; add color or texture notes at checkout if you have preferences. Contact Hello Gravel customer service as soon as possible to request changes—modifications are easier before the order is dispatched. If there is an issue on delivery, report it promptly so we can work toward a resolution in line with our policies.
