Local Insights
Mercer has a city population of 1,430 and sits within a larger metro area with a population of 2.5+ million; that 1.20% annual growth rate points to steady, sustained demand for home improvements, infill development, and landscaping updates. With 228 sunny days per year and an annual rainfall of 34.25 inches in hardiness zone 8b, local projects benefit from many workable days but also require materials that manage both dry spells and periodic wet conditions. Homeowners in Mercer increasingly prioritize durable, locally sourced bulk materials — from soils and topdressings to aggregates and mulches — for driveways, drainage, raised beds, and erosion control. Quality materials matched to local grading and weather patterns reduce maintenance, improve plant establishment, and help projects hold up through seasonal cycles.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Start by matching the material to the project's needs: load-bearing areas (driveways and access lanes) need good compaction and drainage, while garden beds and decorative areas focus on appearance and weed control. Consider durability, drainage, maintenance, and budget when comparing options like gravel, sand, dirt, and stone. Use Hello Gravel's material quiz or calculator for guidance, or contact our sales team for a recommendation based on your project and local conditions.
Northern Wisconsin sees freeze-thaw cycles, heavy snow, spring thaw and winter road salt, all of which influence settling, drainage and durability. Choose materials that drain well and compact appropriately for freeze-thaw conditions and plan projects for late spring to early fall where possible. If you must work in colder months, discuss timing and material choices with our team to reduce risk of frost heave or washout.
Measure the project area (length by width) and decide the depth you need, then convert that volume to tons using our online calculator or standard conversion tools. Hello Gravel's calculator and sales team can help with conversions and give realistic buffers for compaction and waste. Keep in mind our minimum order is 3 tons and local truck capacities can affect how deliveries are staged.
Deliveries are made by contracted dump truck fleets (typically tri-axle), so check access for truck turning radius, overhead lines, bridge or weight limits and steep or soft driveways. Provide clear delivery instructions and a safe drop location; remote sites may need a nearby staging spot if trucks cannot reach the exact point. Confirm your zip code on our site to see availability and any area-specific notes before ordering.
Standard delivery typically requires 2+ business days, and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. You can choose a preferred delivery date during checkout, but exact arrival times are not guaranteed. We recommend scheduling deliveries well ahead of installation dates, especially in spring and fall when demand is higher.
Drivers may be able to perform tailgate spreading at their discretion; you can request this service at checkout but it is not guaranteed. The driver will assess safety and site conditions on arrival and decide whether spreading is feasible. For reliable spreading, consider hiring a local contractor or arranging separate spreading equipment.
Price depends on the material type, quantity, haul distance, site access complexity and seasonal demand. Hello Gravel displays transparent pricing up front and notes any additional fees during checkout; in many areas delivery is free for qualifying orders. For the most accurate cost estimate, use the site quote tool or contact our team with your project details.
Possibly. Some town, county or HOA rules cover driveway changes, shoreland work, grading or large deliveries, so check local permits and HOA guidelines before ordering. Hello Gravel does not obtain permits on your behalf, so contact Mercer town offices or your HOA for specific requirements if you are unsure.
Clear the drop area of vehicles, obstacles and low-hanging branches, and mark utility locations to avoid damage. Provide a flat, stable surface for trucks to access and outline the preferred dump spot with visible markers. If you plan to install or compact material after delivery, have tools or contractor scheduled so the work can proceed quickly and reduce the chance of material spreading or weather damage.
Because Hello Gravel sources regionally, appearance and texture can vary with local geology and batch-to-batch differences; photos are illustrative rather than exact matches. You can add color or texture preferences in the Order Notes, but exact matches are not guaranteed. If appearance is critical, request a sample or consult our sales team before ordering.
Contact our team as soon as possible if you need to modify or cancel an order; changes are easiest to accommodate before processing and dispatch. Once a delivery is en route or scheduled with a hauler, modifications may be limited. We will do our best to help but cannot guarantee all changes are possible.
Contact Hello Gravel customer service promptly with photos and details so we can review the issue and work toward a satisfactory resolution. We will coordinate with the supplier and hauler to investigate; refund or credit options follow our policies and depend on the situation. For urgent site-safety concerns at delivery, notify the driver and our team immediately.
