Local Insights
Mequon homeowners live in a community with a city population of 27,100 and access to a broader metro area population of 2.5+ million. A steady growth rate of 1.20% annually means demand for home improvements, new builds, and infrastructure upgrades is consistent—more driveways, patios, garden projects, and stormwater work over time. Local climate and geography—hardiness zone 8b, about 228 sunny days per year, and annual rainfall of 34.25 inches—create a mix of sun-exposed and seasonally wet conditions that influence material choice. That combination favors durable base materials, reliable drainage aggregates, and topsoils or mulches selected to manage moisture without causing compaction. For homeowners, choosing quality bulk materials reduces rework and helps projects perform through seasonal swings; good material choices support plant health, long-lasting hardscapes, and effective water management across Mequon's yards and properties.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Mequon experiences cold winters with freeze-thaw cycles that can shift and settle materials. Choose materials and build methods that promote drainage and resist frost heave, such as well-graded base layers and proper slope, and expect to compact and edge surfaces to reduce movement. Regional sourcing means texture and color may vary, so plan for local appearance differences.
Many yards around Mequon have heavier soils and areas with clay that hold water and drain slowly, so pick materials and installation methods that improve drainage and reduce ponding. For low spots, add clean fill or a draining base; for slopes or wooded lots, consider erosion control and stabilization solutions. Contractors often add geotextile fabric or larger base aggregates in challenging soils.
Hello Gravel requires a 3-ton minimum order and standard delivery is scheduled for 2+ business days after ordering. Next-day delivery is often available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee, and delivery fees may be waived in many areas but can vary by zip code. Always check availability and pricing for your Mequon zip code at checkout.
Delivery policies vary by supplier and route; Hello Gravel displays clear pricing at checkout and often shows free delivery for many orders, but some deliveries or next-day requests may carry an extra fee. Charges can depend on distance, truck access, and requested services like tailgate spreading. We recommend checking your quote and zip code to see any specific fees before confirming your order.
The main construction season in Mequon runs from late spring through early fall (roughly May through October), when ground is thawed and access is easiest. Avoid heavy work during freeze-thaw months and winter when frozen ground and snow make grading, compaction, and deliveries difficult. Plan projects early in the season to avoid peak contractor demand and allow proper settling before winter.
Permit and HOA requirements vary by neighborhood and project size; common triggers include driveway expansions, curb cuts, or changes to stormwater flow. Check with the City of Mequon building or planning department and your HOA before starting work, and schedule deliveries to avoid blocking streets or violating local rules. If in doubt, contact Hello Gravel or your local contractor for guidance on common local requirements.
Contractors commonly select more stable base systems, larger-diameter drainage aggregates, or geotextile fabric on steep or clay-rich sites to control erosion and improve load-bearing capacity. For wooded lots, they may use smaller delivery trucks or staging areas to protect trees and limit disturbance. Discuss site-specific constraints with your contractor so they can recommend a material and delivery plan that reduces risk and long-term maintenance.
Costs vary widely based on material, site prep, and labor—small landscaping deliveries can be a few hundred dollars while full driveway installs often run from several thousand to tens of thousands of dollars. Maintenance for aggregate surfaces typically includes occasional top-ups, grading, and compaction, while paved options have different long-term needs. Get a site-specific estimate to compare initial install costs versus ongoing maintenance when choosing materials.
Compare materials by upfront cost, expected lifespan, drainage performance, and how they fit the look of your property. Prioritize drainage and structural needs first (to avoid frost heave and pooling), then weigh appearance and maintenance. Use Hello Gravel’s material calculator and speak with our team for guidance tailored to your project size and local conditions.
Standard deliveries are made by dump truck; drivers will place material where safe truck access allows and may offer tailgate spreading at their discretion. Tell us delivery access details and preferred drop location at checkout so we can match you with the right truck and hauler. Remember that spreading is not guaranteed and drivers will assess safety and feasibility on arrival.
Contact Hello Gravel as soon as possible; changes are easier before the order is dispatched and we will make our best effort to accommodate requests. Once materials are on the truck or already processed, changes may be limited and additional fees could apply. For any issues after delivery, contact our customer service so we can work to resolve the situation based on our policies.
