Local Insights
With a population of 488, Lewis sits inside a steadily expanding regional market — part of a metro area of 2.5+ million — that is growing at about 1.20% annually. That steady growth points to ongoing demand for home improvements, yard upgrades, and small-scale construction rather than sudden booms; homeowners can expect regular needs for driveway repairs, grading, drainage fixes, and landscape refreshes. Lewis’s climate and geography — Hardiness Zone 8b, roughly 228 sunny days per year, and 34.25 inches of annual rainfall — favor materials that balance durability with moisture management. A broad mix of quality bulk materials (aggregates, topsoil, sand, mulch, and stone) helps projects perform through both sun-driven planting seasons and wetter periods, minimizing erosion and maintenance while supporting longer-term landscaping goals.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Delivery costs vary by distance, truck type, and site access. In some areas delivery is included for certain order sizes, while rural drops may incur a trip fee or a per-ton charge; contact us or get a quote for an exact price for Lewis zip codes.

Prioritize well-draining, stable materials and good site drainage to handle freeze-thaw cycles. Select materials based on function (structural base, surface layer, or grading) and consider compaction, slope, and runoff when choosing between gravel, sand, dirt, stone.
Some local roads, bridges, and town ordinances have weight or permit rules that affect large deliveries to rural addresses. Check with Lewis township or Bayfield County public works for local restrictions and let your hauler know about narrow roads, low bridges, or gated drives ahead of time.
Measure the area (length x width) and decide the depth in inches for the material, then multiply area by depth and divide by 324 (length x width x depth in inches / 324) to get cubic yards. As a rule of thumb, plan for 2-6 inches for a top surface and 4-8 inches for a structural base, and order a little extra for compaction and waste.
Late spring through early fall is usually best in Lewis because frozen or saturated ground can make delivery and compaction difficult. Schedule deliveries around dry spells and avoid dates when roads may be soft from spring thaw or heavy rains.
Tri-axle dump trucks are commonly used for residential drops because they carry more material while still accessing many driveways. Smaller dump trucks may be used for tight sites, and your delivery confirmation will note truck size so you can plan access and turning radius.
Contractors typically prefer a well-graded, angular base material installed in layers and compacted with a plate compactor or roller. Good drainage, proper layer thickness, and occasional use of geotextile fabric help materials like gravel, sand, dirt, stone perform better through freeze-thaw cycles.
Clear a safe drop zone, mark property lines and any hazards, and trim back vegetation that could block the truck. Make sure gates are unlocked and confirm access instructions at checkout so the driver can position the truck safely; if spreading is requested, note that drivers assess feasibility on arrival.
Because materials reflect local geology, color and texture can vary; take photos and contact customer service promptly if something seems off. For order changes, reach out as soon as possible—changes are easier before the order is dispatched and we will work to accommodate requests when we can.
