Local Insights
Cochrane's city population is 1,930, and its location within a metro area of 2.5+ million combined with a steady 1.20% annual growth rate means homeowners and local contractors can expect consistent demand for renovations, yard upgrades, and new construction. That steady growth often shows up as more driveways, patios, garden beds, and grading work—projects that rely on dependable bulk materials. Local conditions—hardiness zone 8b, 228 sunny days per year, and 34.25 inches of annual rainfall—shape which materials perform best: products used for drainage, erosion control, and plant health must handle alternating sun and rain while base and fill materials need to resist settling and moisture-related movement. For Cochrane homeowners, choosing materials that balance drainage, compaction resistance, and soil health is essential, and reliable sourcing plus thoughtful delivery timing keeps projects on schedule and materials usable when they arrive.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Start by matching material performance to the job: think drainage, compaction, appearance, and maintenance. For example, materials intended for a base need good compaction, while surface materials prioritize look and drainage. Use our aggregate quiz or contact our team for guidance, and consider local conditions in West Wisconsin since regional sourcing affects texture and color.
Rough estimates work for planning: calculate the area (length x width) and decide on the depth you need, then use our online material calculator for a tonnage number. Different materials have different densities, so the calculator or our team will convert cubic yards to tons for you. For small jobs, remember our minimum order is 3 tons.
Typical small landscaping jobs often start at 3 to 6 tons, while a single-car driveway renovation commonly needs 10 to 20 tons depending on depth and base layers. Larger driveways, commercial pads, or long rural entrances may require 30+ tons. Use these ranges as a guide and check our calculator for precise quantities.
Freeze-thaw cycles can cause settling, movement, and frost heave if the wrong material or compaction method is used. Choose materials and depths that promote drainage and stable compaction, and plan installation outside the wettest or coldest periods when possible. Your project may benefit from added base layers or improved grading to reduce freeze-related issues.
Standard delivery requires 2+ business days and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. Avoid scheduling major deliveries during heavy snow or the spring thaw when access can be limited and ground conditions are poor. If you need a specific date, pick it in checkout and confirm access details with our team.
Expect issues like narrow roads, low branches, steep driveways, soft ground, and limited turning space for dump trucks. Trucks are typically tri-axle and need a clear, stable spot to offload; tell us about tight access or hazards in the Order Notes or when you talk to our team. We will coordinate with local haulers and may suggest a nearby staging area if direct access is not possible.
Drivers may be able to perform tailgate spreading at their discretion, but spreading is not guaranteed and depends on safety, crew capacity, and site conditions. Request spreading at checkout and the driver will assess upon arrival whether it can be done. For guaranteed spreading, consider hiring a local landscaper or contractor.
Permit needs vary by project and location; some driveway expansions, culvert work, or changes that affect public right-of-way may require county or township approval. Check with Cochrane village offices, Buffalo County, or local road authorities before starting work. We recommend confirming permits before ordering materials to avoid delays.
Price depends on material type, quantity, local supply, delivery distance, and seasonal demand. Larger orders often reduce per-ton costs, but remote access or next-day delivery fees can increase the total. Use our transparent pricing at checkout and contact our team for a custom quote if you have unique access or staging needs.
Small projects and simple installs like basic paths or garden beds are often DIY-friendly, while driveways, compaction-critical bases, and complex grading are usually best left to contractors. Consider your comfort with equipment and site prep; contractors can save time and reduce risk for larger or technical jobs. If you are unsure, call our team for guidance and an estimate of quantities to share with a contractor.
Contractors typically compare drainage performance, compaction characteristics, material availability, and cost per ton. They also consider seasonal performance in West Wisconsin, ease of spreading, and compatibility with existing soils. Our platform makes it easy to get local supplier options and pricing so contractors can make side-by-side comparisons.
Clear the drop area of vehicles, lawn furniture, low branches, and other obstructions, and mark any underground utilities or sprinkler lines. Make sure the truck has a firm, level place to stop and turn; if the ground is soft, plan an alternate staging area. Add delivery instructions in the Order Notes and contact our team if access is tight.
Natural materials vary by local geology, so color and texture may differ from photos; we note regional variation in product descriptions. Contact our team as soon as possible to request changes—modifications are easier before materials are dispatched but not always possible after. For issues on arrival, reach out to customer service so we can work to resolve it in line with our policies.
