Local Insights
Amherst Junction has a population of 479 and sits within a larger metro region with a population of 2.5+ million that is growing at about 1.20% annually. That steady growth points to ongoing demand for home improvements, new builds, and yard upgrades rather than a sudden construction boom. In a climate with hardiness zone 8b, 228 sunny days per year, and 34.25 inches of annual rainfall, homeowners need materials that handle both sun exposure and seasonal wetness. That means paying attention to drainage, erosion control, and materials that support plant health and outdoor living spaces. Whether you are preparing a driveway base, topping garden beds, or reshaping a yard, quality bulk materials reduce rework, improve performance across seasons, and help projects finish on time and on budget.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Choose based on function, drainage needs, and appearance. Materials like gravel, sand, dirt, stone are selected for how well they compact, how they shed water, and how they look with your home; high-traffic driveways usually need a strong, well-draining base while decorative patios focus more on finish and color. Use our aggregate quiz or contact our team to match material performance to your project and local freeze-thaw conditions.
Amherst Junction experiences cold winters and freeze-thaw cycles, so choose materials and build methods that resist frost heave and shed water. Well-draining materials and a compacted base help prevent movement, and adding a geotextile or proper subbase can improve longevity. Expect regional variation in materials, so plan for slightly different textures or colors than online photos.
Measure the area in square feet and decide on the desired depth in inches, then convert to cubic yards using: cubic yards = (area in sq ft x depth in inches) / 324. Convert cubic yards to tons using a rule of thumb of about 1.2 to 1.6 tons per cubic yard depending on the material; for example, a 1,000 sq ft driveway at 4 inches is roughly 12.3 cubic yards or about 15 to 20 tons. Use our online calculator or request a check from our team if you want a material-specific estimate.
Hello Gravel's minimum order is 3 tons, and standard delivery typically requires 2+ business days to schedule. A next-day delivery option is often available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee, and you can choose a delivery date during checkout. Exact timing depends on supplier and local truck availability in West Wisconsin.
Deliveries are made by contracted dump truck fleets, usually tri-axle trucks, and the driver will place material where access and site conditions allow. You should clear a path, designate a drop location in the Order Notes, and expect the driver to assess safety and access on arrival. Tailgate spreading may be offered at the driver's discretion but is not guaranteed.
Prices vary with material type, haul distance, and local market conditions; rural deliveries often cost more due to distance from suppliers. Typical delivered prices in rural Wisconsin can vary widely, so a common ballpark range is tens to a few hundred dollars per ton delivered depending on material and service level. Request a quote on our site for an accurate price based on your zip code and project details.
Yes, check with the Town of Amherst Junction and Portage County for any local permits, right-of-way rules, curb cut requirements, or stormwater regulations before starting work. Also call your utility locators before digging to mark underground lines and review any neighborhood or HOA rules if they apply. If you're unsure, our team can point you to local contacts to confirm requirements.
Late spring through early fall is usually the best time for delivery and installation because the ground is stable and weather is cooperative. Avoid installing major surfaces during freeze-thaw seasons or when the site is muddy in spring, since frost heave and settling can cause issues. You can still order materials outside that window, but plan installation for stable conditions and consult contractors about timing.
Clear the designated drop area of obstacles, park vehicles away from access points, and provide clear directions in Order Notes so the driver knows where to place material. Make sure there is enough room for a dump truck to turn and that any gates or driveways are wide enough; protect lawns and landscaping if you want to avoid tracked damage. If you need spreading, request it at checkout and be prepared that the driver will assess feasibility on arrival.
Not necessarily; due to regional sourcing, texture, size, and coloration can vary between deliveries. Materials like gravel, sand, dirt, stone reflect local geology, so images should be used as a guide rather than an exact match. You can add color or texture preferences in the Order Notes and contact customer service if you have specific expectations before ordering.
Local suppliers commonly provide bulk delivery and may offer optional services like tailgate spreading or recommendations for local installers, but service levels vary by supplier. Hello Gravel connects you with trusted local haulers; for compaction, grading, or full installation you may need a contractor who offers those services. Ask for service details and any additional fees when you request a quote.
Contact our customer service team as soon as possible; order changes are easiest before the supplier processes the load or the truck is dispatched. We will work to accommodate requests when possible, but changes are subject to supplier and driver schedules and may not always be possible. See our order confirmation for contact details and timing guidance.
