Local Insights
South Burlington has a city population of 47,153 and sits within a compact metro that supports a metro area population of 214,000. With a steady growth rate of 0.80% annually, demand for home improvements, infill projects, and careful infrastructure upgrades is gradual but consistent—meaning homeowners and contractors are more often tackling renovation, drainage, and longevity-focused projects rather than rapid new construction booms. The local climate and geography—hardiness zone 4b, about 185 sunny days per year, and roughly 38.00 inches of annual rainfall—drive specific material needs: stable base mixes for frost resistance, well-draining aggregates to manage spring runoff, and erosion-control materials for sloped lots. In this environment, quality bulk supplies (gravel, sand, dirt, mulch, and stone) matter because proper grading, compaction, and material selection reduce maintenance, protect foundations and driveways from freeze-thaw damage, and support low-maintenance landscaping choices that fit New England’s seasonal cycles.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Start with the project's purpose: load-bearing surfaces need materials that compact well, while planting beds and drainage areas need materials that promote water flow. Consider appearance, maintenance, and local climate effects; our online quiz and material calculator can help narrow options. Because materials are regionally sourced, expect variation in color and texture among gravel, sand, dirt, stone.
Pick materials that compact and drain well so water does not sit and freeze, and choose harder, angular aggregates that resist displacement from plows. Avoid very fine, loose materials in high-traffic areas; combine good base layers with surface material suited to plowing. Remember local sourcing means performance can vary, so ask our team about materials commonly used in South Burlington.
Measure length, width, and desired depth in feet and divide the product by 27 to get cubic yards (length x width x depth / 27). Use our online material calculator to convert cubic yards to tons since density varies by material, or send your dimensions and we can estimate. It helps to round up slightly to account for compaction and spillage.
Plan around seasonal conditions: spring can be muddy, and winter deliveries may be slower or require special planning due to snow and frozen ground. Standard delivery takes 2+ business days, so schedule early for spring and fall projects; next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. If timing is critical, contact our team to discuss lead times and site readiness.
Tell us about driveway width, overhead wires, tight turns, steep grades, and any HOA or street parking restrictions so haulers can plan the safest drop. Indicate the exact drop location and note if curb or street dumping requires a permit. Clear access and a flat safe area help drivers unload quickly and reduce risk of damage.
Tailgate spreading may be available at the driver's discretion and can be requested at checkout, but it is not guaranteed. For compacting, grading, and finished installation we recommend hiring a local contractor or scheduling professional labor. Drivers are focused on safe delivery; they will assess spreading feasibility on arrival.
Our minimum order is 3 tons. Standard delivery is 2+ business days; next-day delivery may be available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. Deliveries are made by contracted local truck fleets, and exact timing is confirmed after you place the order.
Pricing is based on material type, quantity (per ton or per cubic yard), distance from local suppliers, and current seasonal demand. Delivery fees or extra services like next-day delivery or tailgate spreading may add to the total. Use the Get a Quote tool or contact our sales team for a transparent estimate for your address.
We serve many areas but availability depends on supplier and hauler service zones, so check your zip code on our site or contact us to confirm delivery to your address. Tight access, narrow roads, or restricted zones may affect whether a truck can make the delivery or if an alternate drop location is needed. Our team will work with you to find the best solution.
Natural materials vary by region, so color and texture may differ from photos; if that is a concern, note color preferences in Order Notes and ask for samples when available. Contact our customer service as soon as possible to request order changes; we will try to accommodate modifications before dispatch but cannot guarantee changes after trucks are en route.
Some deliveries that require parking on the street, blocking the curb, or using a public right-of-way may need a local permit; rules vary by municipality. Check with the City of South Burlington or your homeowner association before delivery, and let us know if a permit is required so we can coordinate with the hauler. We can also advise on common local requirements if you provide the delivery location.
Choose materials with the right gradation to resist washout and allow water to pass through, and consider combining them with geotextile fabric or retaining features for steep slopes. Proper site grading and a stable base layer are often more important than the surface material alone. Contact our team to discuss local performance and materials commonly used for erosion control in the South Burlington area.
Contractors can set up an account with our team to streamline ordering, get bulk pricing, and schedule recurring or staged deliveries. Provide clear site access instructions, staging areas, and a contact on site for each delivery to keep the job running smoothly. Our sales staff can help coordinate logistics and timing with local suppliers and haulers.
