Local Insights
Monkton is a small Vermont community of 230 residents set within a broader metro area of 993,588 where steady development continues. A measured growth rate of 0.40% annually points to gradual, predictable demand for home projects rather than a construction boom—expect ongoing small-scale improvements like driveway repairs, garden upgrades, septic access work, and occasional additions. With 228 sunny days each year and 33.50 inches of rainfall, the local climate supports frequent outdoor work but also requires materials that perform in both dry and wet conditions. Being in hardiness zone 8b affects plant choices and the soil amendments homeowners select. In this environment, quality bulk materials—gravel, sand, dirt, mulch, and stone—matter because they influence drainage, erosion control, foundation stability, and the durability and appearance of landscaping over time.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Prices vary by distance, material type, tonnage, and time of year. In small Vermont towns, delivery fees can be lower when suppliers are nearby but may increase for remote locations or rush orders; get a quote through our site for transparent pricing. Use our material calculator to estimate quantities, then request a delivery quote to see final costs.
Choose materials that drain well and lock together to resist frost heave and winter plowing. For load-bearing areas consider angular, well-graded aggregates; for top layers choose materials that shed water and tolerate salt and freeze-thaw. Always account for good base preparation and compaction, which matter as much as the material itself.
Coverage depends on the supplier, but many West Vermont haulers serve customers within roughly 20 to 50 miles of their yard. For more remote properties or larger orders, suppliers may travel farther with adjusted delivery fees. Enter your zip code on our site to see local supplier availability and exact delivery options.
Tonnage depends on driveway length, width, and depth. As a rule of thumb, a single-car driveway (about 10 to 12 ft wide) at 3 to 4 inches depth often needs roughly 6 to 12 tons, while deeper base layers will require more. Use our calculator or contact our team with your measurements for a precise estimate.
Yes; many towns require permits or have rules for driveway entrances, stormwater runoff, and work near wetlands or road right-of-ways. Check with the Monkton town office or the local zoning/road authority before ordering material, and get permits if required. If you need help, our team can point you to common local contacts and considerations.
Late spring through early fall is usually the easiest time for deliveries and installation, when roads are clear and ground conditions are stable. Winter deliveries are possible but can be delayed by snow or site access issues, and early spring may be subject to mud or local seasonal weight restrictions. Schedule early and keep an eye on the weather; our checkout calendar shows available delivery dates.
Start with the project's purpose: drainage, driveway, garden bed, or hardscape base determines the best characteristics. Consider drainage needs, load-bearing requirements, appearance, and local climate, then choose a material blend that meets those needs; our aggregate quiz and sales team can guide your selection. Order a small sample or a partial load if you want to confirm color and texture before committing.
Make sure the truck can reach the drop zone, note overhead wires or tight turns, and clear any obstacles from the intended dump area. Expect typical deliveries by tri-axle dump truck and remember our minimum order is 3 tons; request tailgate spreading at checkout if desired, but it is performed at the driver's discretion. If you think you need special access, permits, or a blocked road, arrange those before delivery to avoid delays.
