Local Insights
Lincoln is a small community with a city population of 125 but sits within a broader metro area of 993,588 people. That modest local base and a measured growth rate of 0.40% annually point to steady, incremental demand for home improvement and small-scale construction projects rather than rapid urban expansion. With 228 sunny days and 33.50 inches of annual rainfall in a hardiness zone of 8b, homeowners here need materials that balance durability with seasonality: products that manage drainage during wet spells, resist freeze-thaw movement, and support plantings during long sunny periods. Landscaping, driveway repairs, and foundation-grade work are common projects, so having access to a range of bulk supplies—soil mixes, base aggregates, top dressing, and erosion-control materials—helps homeowners get the right fit for both aesthetic and structural needs. Regional sourcing matters here because local geology and supplier inventories will influence texture, color, and performance of any supplied material.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Start by defining the purpose: load-bearing base, surface dressing, drainage, or planting beds. Consider local climate and drainage needs, then pick a material with the right size, compaction, and permeability; our site’s material quiz and calculator can help. If unsure, request guidance from our team and include project photos in Order Notes.
Lincoln experiences cold winters and freeze-thaw cycles, so choose materials that shed water and resist frost heave when used for driveways or bases. Good drainage and proper compaction are especially important, and seasonal freeze can affect delivery timing and on-site conditions. Expect color and texture to vary because materials are regionally sourced.
Rural deliveries may face narrow driveways, steep grades, low-hanging wires, gates, or soft ground after thaw, so mark obstacles and provide clear instructions at checkout. Our drivers use dump trucks and will assess safe placement on arrival; large orders may require extra staging space or offloading. Share photos and gate codes to help the carrier plan.
Measure the area (length x width x depth in feet), divide by 27 to get cubic yards, and use our online calculator to convert to tons and estimate cost. Depth recommendations vary by use—base layers are deeper than surface layers—so check the calculator or ask our team for guidance. Remember Hello Gravel’s minimum order is 3 tons and pricing includes delivery estimates in checkout.
Yes, check with the Lincoln town office or local road agency for driveway permits, weight limits, or right-of-way rules before scheduling delivery. Also verify wetland setbacks or fill permits for sensitive areas and any neighborhood covenants that affect material placement. When in doubt, contact our team and your municipality early in the planning stage.
Avoid the spring thaw/mud season when roads and lawns can be soft and trucks may have limited access; late spring through fall is generally best for exterior projects. Winter deliveries are possible but may require extra planning for snow, ice, and frozen ground. Always set your preferred date at checkout and allow at least 2 business days for standard delivery; next-day service is available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee.
Lifespan depends on traffic, drainage, and installation quality; well-drained, properly compacted bases last longer and need less frequent topping. Light-use garden paths may settle and need topping every few years, while heavily used driveways typically require periodic regrading or fresh material over time. Proper drainage and occasional maintenance greatly extend service life.
Contractor bids usually separate material, delivery, and installation (grading, compaction, and labor). For rural or hard-to-reach sites, expect additional haul or access fees; Hello Gravel shows material and delivery costs up front and helps coordinate local haulers. Ask contractors for a line-item quote so you can compare material-only delivery from our platform with full installation bids.
Drivers may be able to perform tailgate spreading at their discretion, but this is not guaranteed and depends on site conditions and safety. Request spreading in Order Notes at checkout and be prepared that the driver will assess whether it can be done safely upon arrival. For guaranteed spreading, hire a local contractor and use a delivery-only order for the material.
Contact our customer service as soon as possible; changes are easier before the order is dispatched and we will do our best to accommodate requests. If there is an issue on delivery, report it promptly so we can work with the supplier and hauler to resolve it; see our refund policy for details. Keep photos and notes handy to help speed up resolution.
