Local Insights
Jacksonville's city population is 610, and it sits within a larger regional market that supports a metro area population of 993,588. With a steady growth rate of 0.40% annually, demand for modest new construction, renovations, and landscape upgrades is gradual but consistent — enough to keep local contractors and homeowners planning projects year-round. The local climate, with 228 sunny days per year and 33.50 inches of annual rainfall in hardiness zone 8b, favors projects that balance drainage and durability. That combination means homeowners often need a mix of materials — aggregates for drainage and base layers, topsoil and compost for planting, sand for leveling, and mulch or stone for erosion control. Quality bulk materials matter here because they address both moisture management and plant health while reducing long-term maintenance costs for driveways, paths, and yards.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Start by matching performance to the job: choose materials that provide drainage and stability for driveways, finer materials for leveling and bedding, and looser materials for planting beds. Consider load, slope, and appearance, and plan for a compacted base where needed. Use our material calculator and contact our team for guidance to pick the right option for your specific project.
Jacksonville’s freeze-thaw cycles can cause unbound materials to shift or settle, so pick materials and installation methods that resist frost heave and promote drainage. Schedule major placement and compaction in spring through fall when ground is not frozen. If you must work in colder months, allow extra depth and good drainage to reduce future movement.
Calculate volume in cubic yards by multiplying area (in square feet) by desired depth (in inches) and dividing by 324. Convert cubic yards to tons only after choosing a material, since weight varies by type and moisture. For small projects, add 5-10% extra for compaction and waste, or use our online material calculator for a quick estimate.
Standard delivery typically requires 2 or more business days, while next-day delivery may be available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. Materials are delivered by contracted dump trucks (commonly tri-axle) from local suppliers; you choose your preferred delivery date at checkout. Tailgate spreading can sometimes be done at the driver’s discretion, but it is not guaranteed.
Many haulers can deliver to rural and constrained sites, but truck access, overhead wires, gate width, and slope are assessed by drivers on arrival. Add detailed site notes and photos at checkout to help us match the right hauler, and expect possible extra fees or an alternate drop location if access is restricted. The driver will advise whether materials can be dumped where requested and whether spreading is safe.
Because we source materials locally, color, texture, and particle shape will reflect the geology of the West Vermont area and can vary from photos. These regional differences generally do not affect performance for common uses, but they can change appearance and drainage slightly. If color or texture matters, note your preference in the order notes and contact our team for advice.
Prices vary by material, quantity, and delivery distance, but rural Vermont customers commonly see a broad range like about $25 to $60 per cubic yard or roughly $20 to $60 per ton depending on the product and truck fees. Larger orders and nearby suppliers tend to lower per-unit cost, while small loads, remote delivery, or next-day service raise it. For an accurate quote, enter your zip code and materials on our site or call our team.
Coarser materials generally drain faster and create a stable base for driveways and paths, while finer materials are better for leveling, bedding, or creating a smooth walking surface. Think of base layers for structure and finer top layers for appearance and comfort; multiple materials are often combined for best results. If unsure, describe the finished use and appearance you want and we can recommend a suitable mix.

Drivers may be able to tailgate spread materials at their discretion, but spreading is not guaranteed and depends on safety, access, and local rules. You should request spreading at checkout and include placement details, but plan to do final spreading and grading yourself or hire a local crew. If spreading is required, note that it can increase risk and may incur additional charges.
Contact our customer service team as soon as possible—changes are easiest before the order is processed and dispatched. We will work with suppliers and haulers to accommodate reasonable requests, but changes or cancellations cannot always be guaranteed and may incur fees. Check your order confirmation for contact details and timing guidance.
