Local Insights
East Wallingford is a small but active community with a city population of 2,300. With a modest annual growth rate of 0.40%, construction and landscaping demand here tends to be steady and incremental rather than boom-driven; homeowners typically focus on targeted upgrades, maintenance, and long-term improvements. The local climate and geography—about 228 sunny days per year and 33.50 inches of rainfall, in a hardiness zone of 8b—create a mix of sun and moisture that affects material selection. That balance favors durable, locally sourced bulk materials that manage runoff, support plantings, and withstand seasonal cycles. For projects from driveways and patios to planting beds and erosion control, having access to a range of sands, gravels, topsoils, and mulches makes it easier to match performance to purpose and keep future maintenance realistic.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Start by matching the material to the project goals: strength and compaction for driveways, drainage and filtration for trenches, and finished appearance for patios and beds. Consider site slope, expected load, and whether you need a compactable base or loose top layer. Use our material calculator or contact our team for guidance; regional sourcing means local gravel, sand, dirt, and stone may perform differently than pictured.
Yes. Freeze-thaw cycles and seasonal wetness in Vermont can cause heaving, washout, and slow drainage if materials are not chosen or installed correctly. Pick materials and layer depths that promote drainage and compaction, and time work to avoid saturated ground whenever possible. For steep or frost-prone areas, consider extra base depth, geotextile fabric, or professional installation advice.
Measure the length, width, and desired depth of the area, then convert cubic feet to cubic yards and to tons using our online calculator for a quick estimate. Typical guidance: 2-4 inches for top dressing, 4-6 inches for pathways, and 6-12 inches for driveways or structural bases, but actual depth depends on soil and use. Order slightly more to allow for compaction and grading, and use our aggregate quiz or contact support if you need help.
Standard delivery is 2+ business days from order; next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. Deliveries arrive by professional dump truck (typically tri-axle) and regional sourcing means materials come from local suppliers. You can choose a preferred delivery date at checkout and request tailgate spreading, which drivers may perform at their discretion.
Check for local rules on oversized or curbside deliveries, street blocking, and load weight limits on rural roads or private lanes before placing an order. Also confirm driveway access, overhead wires, narrow entrances, or shared driveways that could affect a truck delivery. Contact your town office or HOA if you are unsure, and let our team know any access constraints when ordering.
Costs vary by material, quantity, and distance from the supplier; pricing is commonly quoted per ton or per cubic yard plus any delivery fee. Hello Gravel has a minimum order of 3 tons and transparent pricing on the site; in many areas delivery may be free but remote or next-day deliveries can carry extra fees. Get an online quote for a tailored estimate and include any site prep or spreading costs in your budget.
Contact our team as soon as possible to request changes or cancellations; it's easiest to modify orders before the supplier processes them. We will do our best to accommodate requests but changes are subject to supplier and dispatcher status and are not guaranteed. If you need to alter delivery details, notify us right away to improve the chances of a successful update.
Because we source materials regionally, texture, color, and gradation can vary from photos and among deliveries. If the material differs significantly from what you expected, contact customer service promptly so we can review options under our refund and resolution policies. Adding notes about color or appearance preferences at checkout can help suppliers match expectations, but exact matches are not guaranteed.
Drivers may be able to perform tailgate spreading at their discretion, but this is not guaranteed and depends on site access and safety. You can request spreading at checkout and the driver will assess whether it can be done safely upon arrival. For larger jobs or precise placement, consider arranging professional spreading or renting equipment beforehand.
Common projects include driveway resurfacing, patios and walkways, drainage improvements, erosion control, raised garden beds, and utility backfill. Choice of material and depth depends on use, local soil, slope, and frost depth, so plan accordingly. For larger or load-bearing projects, consult with a contractor or our team to pick a material and design that meets local conditions.
Clear the drop area of obstacles, mark the desired placement zone, and ensure vehicles have safe access and turning room for a dump truck. Protect sensitive lawns or paved surfaces with plywood if needed, and mark underground utilities or irrigation lines before work begins. If you are unsure how to prepare, contact our support team for site-prep suggestions to reduce delays.
We accept all major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover), PayPal, and Apple Pay through a secure online checkout. Payment details and options are shown during the order process, and you can contact our sales team if you need billing assistance. Orders typically require payment at checkout or per the supplier's terms as presented on your order confirmation.
