Local Insights
Tolstoy is a small community of 147 people within a broader regional metro population of 993,588. With a steady annual growth rate of 0.40%, development tends to be measured and incremental rather than rapid — that means most construction and landscaping demand comes from gradual home improvements, infill projects, and periodic infrastructure updates rather than large building booms. The local climate, with 228 sunny days and 33.50 inches of annual rainfall and a hardiness zone of 8b, favors materials and designs that balance good drainage with sun tolerance. Homeowners here typically prioritize durable, low-maintenance solutions — from base layers for driveways and paths to soil blends and mulches for planting beds — so quality bulk materials are essential to long-term performance in Tolstoy’s conditions. Tolstoy’s combination of substantial sun and moderate precipitation creates specific material requirements: products must manage wetting and drying cycles, promote reliable compaction where needed, and support plantings suited to zone 8b. Local soils and seasonal patterns influence how aggregates, topsoil, and mulches settle and retain moisture, so material choice affects erosion control, drainage, and plant health. Hello Gravel helps homeowners navigate those trade-offs by connecting them with locally sourced materials that reflect regional geology, offering calculators and guidance to estimate quantities, and arranging delivery so projects can proceed on schedule without over- or under-ordering.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

You can order a variety of bulk materials for Tolstoy projects, including gravel, sand, dirt, and stone. Materials are sourced regionally so texture, color, and gradation may vary. Choose materials based on the job function—drainage, load-bearing, finish surface, or planting beds—rather than appearance alone.
Start with the project's function: use durable, angular material for driveways and load-bearing bases; use finer, well-draining mixes for planting or leveling; and use looser, organic material for topsoil and garden beds. Consider drainage, compaction needs, appearance, and maintenance when deciding. If unsure, use Hello Gravel's material quiz or contact our team for guidance.
Common projects include driveways, landscaping beds, erosion control, septic backfill, and small grading jobs. To estimate, calculate area times depth: (square feet x inches of depth) / 324 = cubic yards, then add 5-10% for waste and compaction. Contact our team or use the online calculator for project-specific estimates and to convert cubic yards to tons for ordering.
Tolstoy's freeze-thaw cycles and wet spring conditions can limit hauling and spreading; muddy or soft roads may prevent trucks from safely accessing sites. Many areas have seasonal weight restrictions in spring; check local county rules before scheduling large deliveries. For best results plan deliveries in stable, dry conditions and allow extra lead time during shoulder seasons.
Hello Gravel generally requires a 3-ton minimum and delivers by contracted dump trucks (typically tri-axle). Standard delivery is 2+ business days, and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. You can choose a preferred delivery date at checkout and should check zip code availability for Tolstoy area service.
Yes. Deliveries require adequate access for a large dump truck—clear turning room, a stable surface, and no low overhead obstructions. Drivers will not cross unstable surfaces, driveways with restrictive weight limits, or areas where offloading would be unsafe. Provide clear delivery notes at checkout and contact us if access is tight or there are narrow lanes or culverts.
Drivers may be able to perform tailgate spreading at their discretion, but spreading is not guaranteed. You can request spreading at checkout and the driver will assess safety and site conditions upon arrival. For reliable spreading or install work, arrange a separate contractor or confirm availability before ordering.
Delivered pricing depends on the material type, order size, distance from the supplier, and seasonal demand. Hello Gravel shows transparent delivered pricing in the checkout after you enter your zip code; contact our team for quotes on larger or special projects. Local factors such as regional sourcing and hauling routes can change per-ton or per-cubic-yard costs.
Permit requirements vary by county, township, and the nature of the work (fill placement, changing driveway entrances, or work near wetlands). Check with Roberts County or local township offices before ordering large loads or altering a driveway, and contact Hello Gravel if you need documentation to support permit applications. We recommend confirming rules early to avoid delays.
Natural materials vary by region, so color and texture may differ from photos; if the material is significantly different, contact customer service promptly. For order changes, contact our team as soon as possible—changes are easier before the supplier dispatches the truck but are not guaranteed after processing. See our policies or call support for help resolving issues or arranging exchanges.
