Local Insights
Rowena is a very small community (city population 26) located within a larger regional market that supports steady development. The metro area around Pierre has 993,588 residents and is growing at about 0.40% annually, which points to slow, predictable demand for home improvements and local infrastructure rather than sudden building booms. In practical terms, homeowners and small contractors in Rowena often plan incremental projects—driveway repairs, erosion control, garden beds, and small additions—that favor reliable, locally sourced bulk materials. The region's climate indicators (hardiness zone 8b, 228 sunny days, and 33.50 inches of annual rainfall) mean materials must balance drainage, durability, and surface stability: soils and topdressing for plantings, drainage rock and sand for wet seasons, and surface aggregates that reduce dust on dry, sunny days. Choosing the right mix of gravel, dirt, sand, and mulch helps projects last longer and perform better in these conditions.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Delivery cost depends on material type, distance from the supplier, and order size. In rural South Dakota markets you can expect wide ranges; a rough ballpark is $25 to $75 per ton or $20 to $60 per cubic yard for loose materials, but actual pricing varies by supplier and season. Hello Gravel provides up-front quotes when you enter your zip code and select material so you can see exact costs for your property.
Choose materials that promote drainage and resist freeze-thaw movement for long-lasting results. For load-bearing or driving surfaces use well-graded, angular aggregates and compacted bases, while for beds and decorative areas choose well-draining mixes; keep in mind that gravel, sand, dirt, stone sourced locally will reflect regional geology and performance. If freeze heave is a concern, add a stable base and avoid materials with excessive fines that trap water.
Standard delivery takes 2+ business days, and next-day delivery is often available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. Spring and early summer are the busiest months for landscaping and driveways, so expect longer lead times then; late spring through early fall is generally the best window for installation. Winter deliveries are possible but may be affected by road conditions and frozen ground, which can impact installation quality.
Calculate volume first: multiply the area (square feet) by desired depth (feet) to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 to convert to cubic yards. For example, a 1,000 sq ft area at 3 inches (0.25 ft) depth equals 250 cubic feet or about 9.3 cubic yards. Tonnage depends on material density, so use Hello Gravel’s material calculator or contact our team to convert cubic yards to tons and to confirm minimum order sizes.
Delivery to Rowena is handled by contracted dump truck fleets; many suppliers offer delivery, and some local contractors provide spreading and installation as a separate service. Hello Gravel can request tailgate spreading at checkout, but drivers will assess whether it can be done safely on arrival and spreading is not guaranteed. For full installation work, we recommend hiring a local contractor and coordinating timing so material and labor arrive together.
Homeowners commonly source materials from local material yards, regional suppliers, or online marketplaces that connect to local haulers. Many suppliers and Hello Gravel list a minimum order near 3 tons, though bagged products are available from retailers for very small jobs. Minimums can vary by supplier and delivery distance, so check your zip code in our system for exact options and minimums.
Start by defining the project's purpose: drainage, base support, surfacing, or decorative appearance, and consider load and exposure to freeze-thaw. Materials vary by particle size, angularity, and amount of fines, so select mixes that match the function (for example, stable mixes for driveways, well-draining mixes for beds). Use the aggregate quiz or contact our sales team for recommendations based on your project and local conditions.
Ensure clear access for a tri-axle dump truck, stable ground for the vehicle to drive on, and a clear drop zone free of overhead wires or obstructions. Narrow lanes, soft shoulders, or long offload distances can add fees or require smaller trucks, so share site photos or notes at checkout. Also plan for how you will spread or move material after delivery, especially in frozen or wet conditions.
Because Hello Gravel sources materials regionally, color, texture, and gradation can vary from photos and samples. If you need to change an order, contact our team as soon as possible; modifications are easier before the order is processed and dispatched. For concerns after delivery, contact customer service and we will work to resolve issues in line with our policies.
