Local Insights
Hand County (city population: 32) sits within the North Spearfish, South Dakota Region, where steady growth of 0.69% annually is translating into gradual increases in home renovation, rural build-outs, and smaller construction projects rather than rapid urban expansion. That measured growth means steady demand for accessible bulk materials—driveway maintenance, landscape refreshes, patching and small additions are common homeowner needs, along with occasional contractor work tied to the broader metro area population of 2.4+ million. The local climate and geography—Hardiness Zone 8b with roughly 152 sunny days per year and 33.00 inches of annual rainfall—create a mix of sun exposure and moderate moisture that affects how materials perform. Homeowners benefit from quality, locally sourced aggregates, soil blends, sands, and mulches that balance drainage, erosion control, and UV resistance while matching regional color and texture.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Customers in Hand County typically order a mix of bulk materials like gravel, sand, dirt, and stone for driveways, pads, and landscape beds. These materials are chosen for their function—drainage, compaction, surface finish, or topsoil for planting—and local suppliers often offer regional blends that reflect South Dakota geology. If you are unsure, use our material quiz or contact our team for guidance based on your specific project.
Hello Gravel requires a minimum order of 3 tons and generally schedules standard delivery in 2+ business days. Next-day delivery is often available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee, and rural deliveries in Hand County may incur additional charges depending on distance and access. Exact fees vary by supplier and zip code, so check availability for your address or contact our team.
For the local climate, choose materials that support drainage and resist movement: coarser, angular aggregates perform well for base layers and erosion control, while well-draining mixes reduce frost heave. Lighter, loose materials like sand are useful for leveling and bedding but may need containment in windy areas. Regional sourcing means material texture and performance can vary, so ask our team about mixes suited to Hand County conditions.
Plan deliveries outside the spring thaw and during drier periods to avoid muddy access and poor compaction—late spring through early fall is generally best for placing and shaping aggregates. If you need material during wet or freezing conditions, let us know so we can advise on truck access and potential site prep. Always allow extra lead time for scheduling during busy seasons and severe weather.
Many local suppliers serving Hand County will deliver to rural addresses and farms, but accessibility matters: long driveways, narrow lanes, or soft ground may limit truck access. Additional fees or smaller delivery drops may apply for remote locations, and drivers will assess placement on arrival for safety. Enter your zip code at checkout or contact us to confirm service and any site limitations.
Measure the area in feet (length x width) and the desired depth in inches, then use this formula: cubic yards = (length x width x depth in inches) / 324. Add 10% to 30% for compaction, settling, and grading depending on the material and project, and use our online material calculator or contact our sales team for a quick estimate. If you prefer, provide project dimensions and we can help convert to tons and schedule delivery.
For drainage and erosion control, choose coarser aggregates for channels and French drains, and heavier stone for slope protection or riprap in high‑flow areas; combine with geotextile fabric where erosion risk is high. Topsoil and mulch help stabilize planted slopes, while compacted base layers reduce surface runoff on driveways. Local climate and soil (often clay) influence choices, so consult our team for an approach that suits your site.
Hello Gravel’s core service is sourcing and delivering bulk materials via local suppliers and professional haulers; installation is not guaranteed as part of delivery. Some local suppliers or contractors may offer installation or spreading services—ask at checkout or contact our customer team and we can connect you with local contractors when available. Drivers may offer limited tailgate spreading at their discretion, but this is not a guaranteed service.
Materials are typically delivered by dump truck (usually tri-axle) and drivers will place material where there is safe, legal access and room to maneuver the truck. If driveway width, overhead lines, or soft ground limit access, you may need to arrange alternative placement or additional handling. Add delivery instructions at checkout and our team will confirm placement details before dispatch.
Natural materials can vary by region, so appearance and texture may differ from photos—if you have color preferences, add them to Order Notes or contact us before ordering. For order changes or issues, contact our team as soon as possible; we will make best efforts to accommodate requests before materials are dispatched and to resolve problems after delivery in line with our policies.
