Local Insights
Upper Darby is a community of 34,440 people that sits within a larger metro area of 2.6+ million, and its steady 1.80% annual growth reflects ongoing demand for housing updates, yard improvements, and small-scale infill construction. That steady expansion, combined with 228 sunny days per year and 34.32 inches of annual rainfall, means homeowners and contractors in the area are juggling both planting seasons and stormwater needs. In practical terms, steady population growth increases projects ranging from driveway repairs and patio installs to grading and drainage fixes. Quality bulk materials—gravel, sand, dirt, mulch, and stone—matter here because they influence drainage performance, planting success, long-term walkability, and the durability of hardscape work. Regional sourcing also means materials reflect local geology, so choosing the right gradation and finish helps projects match both function and neighborhood character.

Hello Gravel found me while I was looking for dirt to fill a hole that opened up in my back yard. I originally searched on DirtMatch and when I spoke with Chuck I was originally quoted for 1 ton of dirt. After showing pictures it turned out I needed less than half of that. Chuck talked me through the process of picking the right soil, how to fill the hole, and where to get what I needed from the Lowes local to me. Uploaded pictures of how we found it, after we dug out all the overhang and cleaned it out, and after we filled it in. I saved $400 by talking with Chuck and it only took like 3 hours. I wasn't even an official customer and Chuck took the time to help me with the hole in my yard. And on a weekend no less!!! What I'm saying is if you're looking for honest, kind, caring people to help you with your job. From my experience, this is the place.

Start by matching material properties to your project goals: stability for driveways, drainage for beds and paths, or topsoil for planting. Consider local climate and site conditions in Upper Darby, then use our material calculator and quiz to compare options like gravel, sand, dirt, and stone. If you are unsure, contact our team for guidance based on your measurements and use case.
Materials that offer good drainage and resist movement under wet conditions usually perform best in this climate. Look for aggregates designed to compact well and shed water, and consider a layered approach (base material plus a surface layer) for durability. Regional sourcing means materials may vary, so ask about local performance and recommendations for Upper Darby conditions.
Measure the length, width, and depth of the area to calculate volume, then convert cubic yards to tons if needed using our material calculator. We recommend ordering a small overage (commonly 5-10%) to account for compaction and grading. Use our online estimator or contact our team with your dimensions for a quick check.
Homeowners in Upper Darby typically schedule major outdoor work from late spring through early fall when ground conditions are most stable. Avoid deep winter due to freeze-thaw cycles and very wet early spring when deliveries and compaction can be problematic. If you need materials off-season, plan extra time for delivery and site preparation.
Deliveries are made by dump trucks, often tri-axle, so check for driveway width, overhead wires, and turning clearance before ordering. Provide clear drop-off instructions and photos at checkout if access is tight; our haulers will assess the site on arrival. If a truck cannot reach the desired spot, drivers will place material at the safest nearby location.
Standard delivery typically requires 2+ business days, with next-day delivery available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. Our minimum order is 3 tons, and you can select your preferred delivery date during checkout where available. Note that exact timing depends on local supplier availability and truck scheduling.
Drivers may be able to perform tailgate spreading at their discretion, but this depends on safety, site access, and hauler policies. Request spreading at checkout and understand that it is not guaranteed; the driver will assess feasibility on arrival. For precise placement or professional spreading, consider hiring a landscape contractor.
Permit and HOA requirements vary by township and community, so check with Upper Darby Township and any homeowners association before starting work. Permits may be required for driveway changes, curb cuts, or large-scale grading, and HOAs may have rules on visible materials and timing of work. When in doubt, contact local authorities and your HOA early in the planning stage.
Prices depend on material type, particle size, quantity, and delivery distance from the local supplier, so costs can vary by project. The fastest way to get an accurate estimate is to enter your zip code and order details on our site or request a quote from our team. We show transparent pricing and will explain any delivery fees or surcharges for special access.
Contact our customer service team as soon as possible; changes are easier before an order is dispatched and we will do our best to accommodate requests. If there is a problem at delivery, document the issue with photos and contact us promptly so we can work with the supplier and hauler to resolve it. See our refund and issue resolution policies for details on next steps.
Design projects to promote water flow away from structures using permeable aggregates, proper slope, and drainage channels or dry swales where needed. Choosing the right combination of materials—base layers for structure and surface layers for runoff control—helps manage erosion during heavy rains and freeze-thaw cycles. When designing significant drainage work, consult a pro or our team for site-specific recommendations.
Compare durability, drainage, maintenance, and appearance: some materials compact well for vehicle use but need edging to stay contained, while others drain better but require more frequent topping. Consider long-term maintenance like weed control and regrading, plus how materials perform in local wet and cold conditions. Use our guidance tools or speak with a specialist to balance cost, function, and look for your specific yard.
Materials are delivered by dump truck directly to your driveway or job site, placed exactly where you need them.
