Local Insights
Ray is a small but growing community with a city population of 1,320 inside a larger West Ohio metro area population of 2.6+ million. That 2.33% annually growth rate points to steady demand for home upgrades, new landscaping, and light commercial projects rather than a sudden building boom—expect ongoing renovation, driveway upgrades, patio installs, and garden reworks as neighbors reinvest in properties. Ray sits in hardiness zone 8b and averages 228/year sunny days with 33.00 inches of rain annually, a climate that favors materials and assemblies that handle both occasional heavy showers and long stretches of sun. For homeowners that means choosing bulk materials that balance drainage, erosion control, and moisture retention: well-graded soils and blends for planting beds, permeable aggregates for surfaced areas, and stable base materials for hardscapes all matter more here because they determine long-term performance under local conditions.

While I cannot speak to the actual service, I did enter my phone number to get a quote. I realized it was probably too much for my small project. But I received a very helpful follow up text conversation, and after I explained it was probably more than I needed, they still took time to help me work through how much I would need, and offered me possible solutions, even knowing I wouldn't be using their product. Makes me wish they had fit my needs, if that's the level of service they provided even to a non customers

Just a little hiccup in the delivery date but everything worked out well and with great communication from Janel. Ordering went smoothly as well as working with the delivery team to deliver to the appropriate location for my yard.

For Ray's seasonal weather, choose materials that drain well and compact into a stable base; good drainage and proper compaction matter more than the exact product. A well-graded aggregate placed over a compacted subbase resists rutting and frost heave better than loose, uncompacted fill. Consider the load and traffic: higher-traffic driveways need a more robust base and periodic maintenance. Use our material calculator or contact our team for a recommendation based on your project.
Freeze-thaw cycles can cause heaving and settling if water is allowed to collect in the material or below the surface. Prevent problems with adequate drainage, a compacted subbase, and proper material selection that promotes water flow away from the surface. Keeping fines out of the base and avoiding saturated deliveries in winter reduces risk. Plan for occasional regrading after severe winters.
The easiest time for deliveries and installation in Ray is late spring through early fall when ground is not frozen and access is reliable. Winter deliveries are possible but can be delayed or restricted by weather, frozen ground, or muddy conditions. Order early in the busy season to secure preferred dates; next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. Check local weather and site access before scheduling.
Suppliers typically deliver to rural and unincorporated addresses in the Ray area, but accessibility matters: narrow roads, low-hanging trees, steep grades, and weight-restricted bridges can limit delivery. Our network uses tri-axle dump trucks; if access is tight, note that in Order Notes and we can advise on alternate drop locations or smaller trucks. Additional fees or scheduling restrictions may apply for difficult access—confirm when you request a quote.
Hello Gravel requires a minimum order of 3 tons and offers standard delivery in 2+ business days in many areas, with next-day delivery available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. Delivery fees vary by distance from local suppliers, load size, and site access; some locations qualify for free delivery. We provide transparent pricing up front—enter your zip code or request a quote to see local fees and options.
Think of material cost plus expected maintenance over time: a cheaper material can cost more if it requires frequent topping up or repairs. Match the material to the use—high-traffic driveways need more durable, better-compacted aggregates, while decorative beds can use lower-cost options with periodic refreshes. Consider lifecycle costs, drainage needs, and how often you want to maintain the area; our team can help estimate quantities and comparative costs.
Yes—check with Scioto County, local township, or Ray municipal offices for rules about grading, floodplain or wetland disturbance, and large fill or excavation projects. Some projects may require permits, erosion control plans, or setbacks from waterways and septic systems. For large deliveries or changes to property grade, contact local authorities before ordering and note any permit requirements in your project planning. If you need help, our sales team can suggest typical questions to ask local officials.
Suppliers commonly price by ton or by cubic yard, and small residential orders often have a higher per-unit cost than bulk commercial loads. Delivery, access difficulty, and special handling (like tailgate spreading) can add fees. Use our online calculator for an estimate and request a local quote to see exact pricing for your address and project size.
Drivers may offer tailgate spreading at their discretion; you can request it at checkout but there are no guarantees due to safety and equipment limits. Compaction, detailed grading, and cleanup are typically separate services handled by landscaping or contracting crews rather than standard delivery. If you need spreading or compaction, ask for recommendations or hire a local contractor for guaranteed results.
For erosion-prone areas, prioritize solutions that combine stable aggregate, good drainage, and vegetation to hold soil in place. Heavier, angular aggregates placed at the slope toe and permeable materials higher on the slope help slow water flow and reduce erosion. Avoid fine, easily washed materials near waterways and check local regulations before adding material near streams or floodplains. Pair material delivery with erosion-control measures like silt fence, mulch, or plantings for best results.
