Local Insights
New Salem has a city population of 500 and sits within a larger metro area of 2.6+ million, a regional context that helps explain steady construction and landscaping demand. A growth rate of 2.33% annually indicates consistent investment in housing and infrastructure rather than sudden booms, so homeowners should expect ongoing projects: driveway repairs, yard regrading, garden installations, and small additions. The local climate — 228 sunny days and 33.00 inches of annual rainfall in hardiness zone 8b — creates a long outdoor season with moderate moisture. That combination increases the need for materials that balance drainage and stability. Quality bulk supplies like sand, topsoil, mulch, stone, and graded aggregates matter here because they determine how well driveways shed water, how garden beds retain moisture without waterlogging, and how hardscaping resists settling over time.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Start by matching the material to the job: think about drainage, how much weight the surface will take, and the look you want. In New Salem, a mix of gravel, sand, dirt, stone is commonly used for bases, surfacing, and drainage layers; choose coarser, angular materials for structural bases and finer, decorative mixes for top layers. Use our material calculator or take the aggregate quiz for guidance, and order a small test load if you want to check color and texture first.
Freeze-thaw cycles, wet springs, and seasonal rainfall in the West Ohio area mean you should prioritize materials that drain well and compact reliably. Expect regional variations in gravel, sand, dirt, stone due to local geology; for example, angular crushed products usually resist frost heave better than very fine, loose materials. Plan for seasonal timing of deliveries and installations to avoid working in saturated or freezing ground.
Typical projects include driveways and driveway repairs, drainage improvements, garden and mulch beds, paver bases for patios and walkways, and erosion control. Each project has different depth and compaction needs, so match the material and thickness to the job and consult guidance or a contractor if you are unsure. Our site offers rough quantity estimates and examples to help plan these common projects.
Measure the area in feet, decide on the desired depth in inches, and convert to cubic yards (area x depth / 324). Then use our online calculator to convert cubic yards to tons for local materials, keeping in mind density varies by material; Hello Gravel’s minimum order is 3 tons. Always add 5-10% extra for compaction, settling, and waste, and round up to the next available load size if needed.
Standard delivery is typically available in 2+ business days, and next-day delivery can be arranged for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. Materials are delivered by contracted dump-truck fleets (usually tri-axle trucks) and we offer scheduled delivery dates during checkout; free delivery applies in many areas but depends on location and supplier. Drivers may offer tailgate spreading at their discretion if you request it at checkout, but that service is not guaranteed.
Most drivers can place material on a driveway or a sturdy, accessible low-point, but trucks are heavy and need room to maneuver. Clear the area of vehicles, mark utilities and overhead lines, and indicate your preferred drop spot in Order Notes; if access is tight, consider a smaller drop location or offload point. If you need help choosing the best drop spot for gravel, sand, dirt, stone, contact our team before delivery.
Contact our customer service team as soon as possible if you need to change or cancel an order; modifications are easiest before the order is dispatched. We will do our best to accommodate requests, but ability to change depends on supplier and trucking schedules and cannot be guaranteed. For the smoothest process, include special instructions in Order Notes at checkout and call if plans change.
Some local building departments or homeowners associations may have rules about driveway materials, visible surfacing, drainage, and curb cuts, so check New Salem or regional township regulations and any HOA guidelines before ordering. Permitting requirements vary by project size and scope, especially for structural or drainage changes. When in doubt, contact your local permitting office or HOA to confirm rules before purchasing materials.
Installation costs vary with project complexity, local labor rates, and the material used; contractors may charge by the hour, by square foot, or by project. Get at least two or three local quotes, review references, and ask about experience with gravel, sand, dirt, stone installations in local soil and climate. Hello Gravel can help with materials and delivery, but we do not perform installations; our sales team can suggest local pros to consider.
Because materials are regionally sourced, color, texture, and particle size can vary from photos and batches; this is normal for natural aggregates. If the material differs significantly from your expectations, contact customer service with photos and order details so we can work with the supplier to address your concerns. Keep in mind exact color or texture matches cannot be guaranteed, so ordering a small sample or a test load is a good option for visible areas.
Hello Gravel requires a 3-ton minimum order, with payment accepted via major credit cards, PayPal, and Apple Pay through a secure checkout. Delivery fees depend on distance, supplier policies, and whether you choose next-day delivery; many areas qualify for free delivery but check your zip code for availability. Any additional services, such as requested tailgate spreading or specific drop locations, may affect fees depending on supplier and driver availability.
Focus on the function you need: drainage, load-bearing, erosion control, or decorative appearance, and compare materials by those criteria rather than just name or price. Use our material descriptions and the aggregate quiz to narrow options, and call our sales team if you want help applying local considerations like soil type and West Ohio weather to your choice. If appearance matters, order a sample or small test load to confirm color and texture before committing to a full delivery.
