Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Choose materials based on function, drainage, and maintenance needs. For driveways, look for well-graded aggregates that compact and shed water; for planting beds or topsoil needs, dirt or screened blends work better; for decorative areas, consider appearance and size. Consider local climate and expected traffic, and use our material calculator or contact our team for guidance tailored to your project.
Freeze-thaw cycles make drainage and proper compaction especially important. Choose materials that allow water to pass through and compact well to reduce movement and frost heave. Schedule work during milder months when possible, and add a stable base or geotextile where repeated freeze-thaw or wet soils are a concern.
Standard delivery typically takes 2 or more business days, with next-day delivery available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. You can select a preferred delivery date during checkout and we will confirm scheduling with a local hauler. Keep in mind weather and local events can affect timing, so plan accordingly for seasonal projects.
Suppliers usually price materials per ton or per cubic yard, and delivery fees depend on distance, truck type, and load size. Hello Gravel provides transparent pricing at checkout that includes material cost and delivery details, and many orders qualify for free or flat-rate delivery depending on location. Contact our team for a detailed quote if you have an unusual access situation or need expedited service.
Estimate volume by measuring length, width, and depth of the area, then convert to cubic yards or tons using our material calculator. As a rough guide, a small walkway or garden bed often needs 1 to 3 tons, a single-car driveway 6 to 12 tons, and a two-car driveway 12 to 20 tons depending on depth and base layers. When in doubt, use our calculator or contact support for a quick estimate and include a small overage for compaction and grading.
Yes, recycled and locally sourced materials are commonly available through regional suppliers and can be cost-effective and environmentally friendly. They may vary in color, size, and consistency compared with virgin materials, so consider appearance and grading requirements for your project. Ask about local options in checkout notes or to our sales team to find a balance between price and performance.
Permit and driveway regulations vary by township and county, so check with your local building or township office before ordering materials. Restrictions can include driveway permits, curb cuts, weight limits for delivery trucks, or rules about stockpiling in public right-of-ways. If you need help identifying the right local contacts, our team can point you toward common resources, but final responsibility for permits rests with the customer.
Drivers may offer tailgate spreading at their discretion, but this service is not guaranteed and depends on safety, site access, and local rules. Prepare a clear drop zone and mark utilities, low branches, and no-drive areas to speed delivery and reduce risk. If spreading is essential, request it at checkout and plan to hire additional labor if the driver cannot perform the task.
Compare materials by how well they drain, how easily they compact, how much upkeep they require, and initial cost. Drainage is important in freeze-thaw climates, so choose materials with good permeability where needed; compactable, angular materials provide a stable base, while rounded materials may require more maintenance. Balance upfront material cost with expected maintenance and lifespan to pick the best option for your property.
Late spring through early fall is generally the best window for most outdoor projects, when ground is unfrozen and weather is more predictable. Winter deliveries are possible but can be complicated by frozen ground, snow, and limited hauling access. Schedule earlier in the season for projects that require settling or final grading before cold weather arrives.
