Local Insights
Lockbourne is a small but active community with a population of 2,560, and it sits within a growing regional market that supports steady construction and landscaping activity. A local growth rate of 2.33% annually means gradual increases in new homes, infill projects, and outdoor upgrades, while a broader metro area population of 2.6+ million drives demand for infrastructure and contractor resources nearby. With 228 sunny days per year, 33.00 inches of annual rainfall, and a hardiness zone of 8b, homeowners here benefit from a long planting season but also face periodic heavy rainfall that stresses drainage and erosion controls. That combination makes quality bulk materials—topsoil, mulch, sand, gravel, and structural stone—especially important: they help manage water, provide stable bases for drives and patios, and support healthy plantings that match the local climate and soil conditions.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Choose materials based on use, appearance, and maintenance. For vehicle areas pick a stable, compactable material; for walkways choose a finer, smooth product; for patios select a material that provides a solid, level base. Because we source locally, expect regional variation in gravel, sand, dirt, stone — ask our team if you need a look or performance match.
Repeated freeze-thaw cycles can cause settling and heaving if materials are not properly installed and drained. Use well-graded, compactable base material and plan for runoff management to reduce movement over time. Choosing materials that shed water and adding a proper sub-base helps extend performance in West Ohio weather.
Spring through fall is typically easiest for delivery and installation because ground conditions are more predictable. Winter deliveries are possible but can be delayed by snow, frozen ground, or reduced truck access, so plan extra time. Regardless of season, order early and check our 2+ business day standard lead time or next-day option for orders placed before noon CST.
Tonnage varies by material density, but a rough rule is 1 cubic yard equals about 1.2 to 1.6 tons depending on the product. Expect a small walkway or garden bed to need 3–6 tons, a single-car driveway 12–20 tons, a two-car driveway 20–40 tons, and a typical patio 6–12 tons. For drainage trenches or erosion control, calculate by volume and add 10–20% for compaction and grading waste.
Prices depend on the material type, distance from local suppliers, and the size of your order; minimum orders start at 3 tons. As a guide, delivery charges and material costs vary by product and location, so get a quote for an accurate price. Hello Gravel shows upfront pricing online and can schedule standard delivery (2+ business days) or next-day for qualifying orders.
Local building codes, county rules, and HOA covenants can limit materials, colors, curb cuts, drainage solutions, or impervious surface area. Always check with Lockbourne city offices, Pickaway County (if applicable), and your HOA before ordering to confirm permitted materials and any permit requirements. If in doubt, contact our team for common guidance but verify with local authorities.
Pick materials based on permeability, particle size, and how much maintenance you want to do. Coarser, free-draining mixes are better for drainage, while larger stone or angular rock works well for erosion control; finer materials are better for smooth walking surfaces or top dressing. Consider long-term maintenance: low-maintenance landscapes favor durable, stable materials and proper grading to move water away from structures.
We connect you with trusted local suppliers and contracted dump truck fleets who deliver to Lockbourne zip codes. Deliveries are typically made by tri-axle dump trucks, require at least 3 tons per order, and follow our scheduling options (standard 2+ business days, next-day for orders placed by noon CST for an extra fee). Drivers may offer tailgate spreading at their discretion; please request it at checkout and be prepared for the driver to assess safety and feasibility on arrival.
Clear a staging area and mark the drop location, remove obstacles, and note overhead wires or low branches that could block a truck. Protect fragile lawns or paved surfaces if you are concerned about truck access, and flag any underground utilities before digging or grading. Have a contact person available at delivery and confirm driveway width and turning room when scheduling.
Contact Hello Gravel as soon as possible if you need to change or cancel an order; changes are easier before the order is dispatched. We will do our best to accommodate requests, but modifications depend on supplier and truck scheduling and are not guaranteed. For issues after delivery, contact customer service and refer to our refund and issue-resolution guidance for next steps.
