Local Insights
Galloway's community of 27,770 residents sits inside a growing regional market—the metro area is 2.6+ million people and expands at about 2.33% annually—so steady housing turnover, infill, and landscaping upgrades are keeping demand for bulk materials high. Local climate and geography (228 sunny days per year, 33.00 inches of annual rainfall, hardiness zone 8b) create mixed conditions: reliable sun that increases UV exposure and evaporation, balanced by enough rain to make drainage and erosion control important. That combination means homeowners need a range of materials — topsoil and mulch for beds, aggregates and sand for stable bases, and quality fill for grading — chosen for local performance. Using properly sourced, correctly sized materials reduces settling, erosion, and surface damage over time and supports longer-lasting landscape and hardscape results.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Galloway experiences seasonal freeze-thaw cycles, snow and spring rains, so pick materials that drain well and tolerate wet conditions. Coarser, angular aggregates and mixes that shed water reduce frost heave and standing water compared with fine, compacting materials. Plan for local seasonal extremes when deciding depth and base layers, and ask our team about local options that reflect West Ohio geology.
Hello Gravel requires a minimum order of 3 tons for bulk delivery; total cost depends on material type, quantity, distance from the local supplier and requested delivery speed. Many nearby deliveries are included or low-cost, while longer hauls or next-day service may carry additional fees. Use our online quote tool or contact sales for an exact estimate for your zip code.
Measure the length, width and desired depth of the area to calculate cubic feet, divide by 27 to get cubic yards, then convert to tons based on material density. Densities vary by material, so use Hello Gravel’s material calculator or allow a 5-10% overage for compaction and grading. If you prefer, send dimensions to our team and we can help estimate quantities.
Late spring through early fall is the most forgiving for most installations because the ground is workable and weather is milder. Deliveries are available year-round, but frozen or saturated ground can complicate placement and performance, and next-day slots can be limited in peak season. Schedule early for popular months and allow extra time for cold-weather or storm-prone periods.
Materials that are free-draining and resist packing tend to handle freeze-thaw cycles better—typically coarser aggregates and mixes that allow water to move through the base. Avoid using very fine, cohesion-heavy materials in frost-susceptible areas unless paired with proper base and drainage. Local suppliers source materials suited to West Ohio, so ask about regional options when ordering.
On slopes or poorly draining sites, prioritize materials and assemblies that promote drainage and erosion control—coarser aggregates, layered base, and geotextile fabric can stabilize surfaces. Consider terraces, retaining edges, and proper grading to move water away from structures, and add drainage pipes or swales where needed. Our team can recommend materials that fit slope, load and appearance goals.
Check with the Village of Galloway or your county building department and any homeowners association for driveway permits, curb cut rules, or restrictions on large deliveries. If a truck needs to block the street, a permit or temporary road closure may be required in some areas. Tell us about any restrictions when you order so we can coordinate with the hauler.
After you order online you choose a delivery date and we match you with a local supplier and contracted dump truck. Typical delivery is by tri-axle dump truck; drivers will place material at the agreed drop point and may offer tailgate spreading at their discretion. Expect standard delivery in 2+ business days, next-day options before noon CST for an extra fee, and a call or text with delivery details.
Clear the drop area of vehicles, lawn furniture and low-hanging branches, and flag the exact spot where you want material placed. Make sure there is safe truck access and tell us about narrow gates, slopes or overhead obstacles when ordering. If underground utilities are a concern, call local utility locators before delivery and note any fragile landscaping you want to protect.
It varies: many contractors prefer to supply materials because it streamlines scheduling and ensures consistency, while some are happy to install owner-supplied aggregates to meet a homeowner’s budget or aesthetic choices. If you’re working with a contractor, check who will order materials and coordinate timing so delivery and installation line up. We can deliver to the contractor or homeowner—tell us your preference at checkout.
Natural materials vary by region, so color and texture can differ from photos; if you’re concerned, ask for supplier details or a sample before delivery. Contact our team as soon as possible to request changes—modifications are easier before the order is processed or dispatched but not always possible. For issues after delivery, contact customer service promptly and we will work to resolve it in line with our policies.
Start by defining function: load-bearing surfaces need stronger, compactable bases; drainage areas need free-draining materials; garden beds prioritize texture and appearance. Consider depth, maintenance, local climate and how the surface will be used, then use Hello Gravel’s material quiz or call our experts for tailored recommendations. We can suggest several material options suitable for Galloway conditions and help you compare tradeoffs.
