Local Insights
Galion homeowners should plan projects with the town's size and regional growth in mind: with a population of 13,990 and a surrounding metro area of 2.6+ million, steady expansion (2.33% annually) is keeping demand high for new yards, driveways, and small-scale construction. That steady growth means more renovations, drainage upgrades, and outdoor living projects rather than one-off large developments; homeowners increasingly need reliable access to consistent bulk materials on predictable timelines. Galion's climate — about 228 sunny days per year and 33.00 inches of annual rainfall in a hardiness zone of 8b — favors materials that balance drainage and moisture retention. Quality bulk supplies (gravel, sand, soil mixes, mulch, and stone) matter here because they control runoff, support plantings suited to the zone, and reduce maintenance on driveways and paths exposed to frequent sun and occasional heavy rain.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Coverage varies by material and depth, but as a general rule 1 ton will cover about 80-100 square feet at a 2-inch depth and about 40-50 square feet at a 4-inch depth. Regional material density and particle size in West Ohio can change those numbers, so use our online calculator or contact our team for a precise estimate.
Measure the area in square feet and decide the depth in inches, then use a simple rule of thumb: tons ≈ (area in sq ft × depth in inches) / 100. This is an approximation—use Hello Gravel’s material calculator for better accuracy and add 5-10% for compaction, grading, and waste.
Prices vary by material, local supply, and current market conditions, but bulk aggregates in Ohio commonly range roughly from $15 to $50 per ton. Your exact price for Galion will appear at checkout and includes regional sourcing, with delivery and any additional services shown separately.
Assuming a 20 ft by 10 ft driveway (200 sq ft) and a 3-inch top layer, you would typically need about 2 to 4 tons depending on material and base requirements. Material costs could range widely depending on the product—expect a modest materials-only range (for example, a few dozen to a few hundred dollars) plus delivery; use our calculator or get a quote for a precise estimate.
That depends on your truck’s payload capacity and the material’s weight and volume. One ton equals 2,000 lbs and many light-duty pickups have payloads below that, so you may exceed the vehicle limit or run out of bed volume. For safety and convenience, we recommend checking your owner’s manual or choosing professional delivery—note our minimum order is 3 tons in many areas.
Dump truck sizes vary; a common tri-axle truck carries roughly 10–14 tons of material. Depending on depth, that can cover a few hundred to more than a thousand square feet at shallow depths; contact us with your project dimensions and we’ll match the right truck and give a coverage estimate.
Cheapest options are usually locally sourced base mixes, reclaimed material, or screenings, but lower cost often means more maintenance and faster settling. Balance upfront cost with longevity—spending a bit more on a proper base and drainage typically lowers long-term upkeep in West Ohio’s freeze-thaw climate.
For good drainage and resistance to frost heave, prioritize well-graded, angular aggregates and a solid base layer; materials that shed water (like certain gravels or crushed stone) work better than fines for drainage. Consider geotextile fabric, proper slope, and layered construction; our team can recommend material mixes suited to Galion’s local geology and climate.
Standard delivery is typically 2 or more business days, and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. Deliveries are made by local contracted haulers in dump trucks, minimum orders often apply, and tailgate spreading can be requested but is performed at the driver’s discretion with no guarantee.
Contact our team as soon as possible—changes are easier to accommodate before the order is processed or dispatched. We’ll do our best to help, but any modifications depend on supplier and truck scheduling; see our order policy or contact customer service for specifics.
