Local Insights
Dover homeowners (city population 16,170) are building and renovating in a community experiencing steady growth. At a 2.33% annual growth rate, demand for housing, driveways, hardscaping, and small infrastructure projects is rising—meaning more frequent needs for bulk materials across yards and job sites. Dover's climate and geography further shape those needs: with 228 sunny days per year and 33.00 inches of annual rainfall in a hardiness zone of 8b, projects must balance sun exposure and periodic wet weather. That combination favors materials that support drainage, resist washout during storms, and tolerate seasonal settling. Homeowners are increasingly focused on practical upgrades—better drainage, durable access routes, and low-maintenance landscaping—which calls for a range of aggregates, soils, and mulches sourced locally to match ground conditions and appearance.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Choose materials based on load, drainage, and appearance rather than a single 'best' option. For vehicle areas pick materials that compact well and shed water; for patios and walkways choose materials that provide a stable, level surface and match your desired look. Consider the group of gravel, sand, dirt, stone together when planning layers (subbase, base, finish) and ask for samples or photos to judge color and texture.
Freeze-thaw cycles can cause shifting, settling, and frost heave if materials and the base are not chosen or installed properly. Using well-graded materials, proper compaction, and good drainage reduces heave and movement. In Dover it is also helpful to allow a stronger base layer and to avoid excessive fines in top layers that trap moisture.
Bulk delivery minimums and fees vary by supplier and distance, but Hello Gravel commonly requires a minimum order and works with local haulers to keep costs transparent. Many orders qualify for free standard delivery; additional fees may apply for next-day service, long drives, tight access, or special sites. Always request a written quote for your zip code to confirm minimums and any extra charges.
Materials that drain well and lock together when compacted typically need the least maintenance in wet and snowy conditions. Well-graded materials used over a prepared base with edging and slope to shed water will resist washout and rutting. Regular light maintenance such as regrading low spots each season helps extend service life.
Yes. City ordinances and HOA covenants can restrict driveway materials, front-yard coverings, and stormwater handling. Before ordering, check Dover zoning rules and any HOA guidelines for approved materials, colors, setbacks, and permeable surface requirements. When in doubt, contact your city planning office or HOA and review any permit requirements.
The best time is generally late spring through early fall when the ground is unfrozen and weather is drier. Avoid installation during heavy rain, freeze-thaw conditions, or when the ground is saturated. Planning work for warmer, stable months helps compaction, curing, and scheduling of delivery.
Local suppliers typically deliver within a region that covers Dover and nearby towns; service radii often range from a few miles up to 30–50 miles depending on material and truck availability. Hello Gravel standard delivery is usually scheduled 2+ business days out, with a next-day option available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. Expect a confirmation call or text with timing and driver instructions before delivery.
Soil that holds water (clay) needs more permeable materials and additional drainage features to prevent pooling and erosion, while sandy soils may need stabilization to avoid washout. Matching the aggregate gradation to the soil and using geotextile fabric, proper slope, and edging helps control erosion. For larger or steep sites, consider designing swales, French drains, or retaining measures and consult a local contractor if erosion risk is high.
Use coarser, well-graded material for subbase to provide structural support and drainage, medium gradation for base and bedding to lock in place, and finer or decorative material for the surface depending on appearance and use. The exact gradation depends on the project type and local availability, so talk to suppliers about common mixes in the Dover area. Proper layering and compaction are more important than any single material choice.
Simple deliveries of bulk materials to private property often do not require a permit, but large-scale driveway replacements, grading changes, or work that affects public right-of-way may need permits. If the delivery requires street closures, oversized trucks, or impacts drainage, check with Dover public works or building department before scheduling. When in doubt, contact the city office to confirm rules and avoid delays.
Measure the area (length x width) and decide on the depth you need, then convert that volume to cubic yards using a calculator or our online material calculator. Hello Gravel provides tools and team support to help estimate quantities and will advise on minimum order sizes; rounding up slightly helps account for compaction and waste. If you are unsure, send photos and dimensions to our team for a quick estimate.
Clear a path and parking area for a dump truck, mark any underground utilities, and remove obstacles like low-hanging branches or vehicles. Designate a preferred drop location and note access issues in the order notes; you can request tailgate spreading at checkout but the driver will decide if it is safe to perform. Finally, protect nearby landscaping and communicate any special instructions to the delivery team ahead of time.
