Local Insights
Underwood has a city population of 810 and sits within a broader metro area population of 2.5+ million. With an annual growth rate of 0.40%, the community is seeing steady, incremental expansion that tends to drive consistent demand for homeowner improvements and periodic construction work rather than sudden booms. The local climate—hardiness zone 8b with 152 sunny days per year and annual rainfall of 33.50 inches—creates a mix of sun exposure and significant precipitation that shapes material choices. Homeowners and contractors in Underwood often prioritize products that manage water, stabilize soil, and reduce maintenance: well-graded fill and base materials for driveways and patios, drainage-friendly aggregates, reliable topsoil and compost blends, and erosion-control solutions. Because regional geology affects texture and color, sourcing quality bulk materials locally helps ensure performance and visual harmony with the landscape.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Homeowners in Underwood commonly order bulk materials like gravel, sand, dirt, and stone for driveways, pathways, drainage work, and garden beds. These materials come in different sizes and gradations, so pick a material based on the function you need (base, drainage, or surface). If you are unsure, use our material quiz or contact our team for guidance on the best option for your project.
Freeze-thaw cycles can cause settling and frost heave if materials and installation are not suited for seasonal movement. Choose well-draining materials and proper base layers and ensure good grading and compaction to reduce freeze-related shifting. For best results, plan installation in warmer months and discuss local climate concerns with our team before ordering.
Our minimum order is 3 tons. Standard delivery typically takes 2 or more business days, and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. You can choose your preferred delivery date at checkout and should check your zip code to confirm local availability.
Deliveries are sourced from local suppliers, so serviceable zones depend on supplier coverage around Underwood. Materials delivered from farther away may incur extra-haul fees or minimums, and large or remote drop locations can affect scheduling. Enter your zip code on our site or contact our team to see specific delivery options and any additional charges.
Prices vary by material type, local supply, season, and hauling distance, so exact rates change by order. Small towns often see slightly higher delivery costs due to distance from quarries or pits; check our online checkout for current per-ton or per-yard pricing for your zip code. For a detailed estimate, use our material calculator or request a quote from our team.
Late spring through early fall is typically best for ordering and installation to avoid frozen ground and winter delays. Installing during warmer, drier months makes compaction and grading easier and helps materials settle properly. If you need material in colder months, plan for slower work and possible additional costs or equipment needs.
Common additional services include tailgate spreading, on-site spreading by third-party crews, compaction, and grading. Tailgate spreading may be offered at the driver's discretion and is not guaranteed; full spreading and compaction are usually arranged separately with local contractors and priced based on job size and complexity. Ask for estimates from our sales team if you need bundled delivery-plus-installation pricing.
Estimate the volume in cubic yards by multiplying area (feet) by depth (feet) and dividing by 27, then convert to tons if needed using our material calculator because densities vary. As a quick rule of thumb, many aggregates fall between about 1.2 and 1.6 tons per cubic yard, but that varies by material. Use our online calculator or call our team for help with a site-specific estimate.
Most simple deliveries require no special permits, but large projects that block the street, change drainage, or alter public right-of-way may require city or county permits. Check with Underwood city hall or Kidder County before scheduling large installations or any work that will impact public access. If you are unsure, our team can help point you to local resources to verify permit needs.
Material appearance and texture can vary due to regional sourcing, so exact color or consistency may differ from photos. If you have an issue with an order, contact our customer service promptly and we will work with the supplier and hauler to resolve it; see our refund and resolution guidance for details. Clear photos and order details help speed up resolution.
