Local Insights
Towner County serves a community with a city population of 2,186 and sits within a broader metro area of 2.4+ million people. A steady growth rate of 1.32% annually signals consistent, incremental demand for home renovations, new residential lots, and local infrastructure—more driveways, drainage projects, patios, and landscape upgrades. The local climate and geography shape material choices: with 228 sunny days per year and an annual rainfall of 33.50 inches, homeowners need materials that balance sun and moisture exposure—durable base materials for load-bearing surfaces, well-graded soils for planting, and mulches or top dressings that protect against erosion. Being in hardiness zone 8b influences plant selection and the soil and mulch mixes homeowners prefer. In this environment, accessible, quality bulk materials—gravel, sand, dirt, mulch, and stone—are essential for building resilient landscapes and lasting hardscapes.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Hello Gravel requires a minimum order of 3 tons and standard delivery is typically 2+ business days. Delivery fees vary by distance, site accessibility, and supplier; many orders qualify for free delivery while remote drops in Towner County may incur extra charges. Contractors in the area generally choose materials that compact well and drain easily, so mixes that combine angular stone with fines are common choices. Consider a durable base layer topped with a wearing layer suited to traffic and drainage needs, and ask about local variations of gravel, sand, dirt, stone when ordering. Your choice should balance load-bearing needs, budget, and seasonal performance.
Freeze-thaw cycles in Towner County can cause frost heave and surface breakup if material and drainage are not right for the site. Using well-draining, well-compacted base materials and maintaining proper slope and drainage reduces issues and extends lifespan. Expect more frequent grading and spot repairs after harsh winters.
Standard delivery is usually 2+ business days, while next-day delivery may be available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. During spring and fall peak seasons, lead times can lengthen because of higher demand and limited hauling windows, so plan and order early. We recommend booking deliveries ahead of planned projects to secure the preferred date.
Many suppliers will deliver to rural and unincorporated areas if the drop site is accessible for a tri-axle dump truck, but additional fees can apply for long hauls, difficult access, or off-road drops. Provide clear access notes and GPS coordinates at checkout to help haulers plan. If access is limited, consider a closer meet point or smaller truck options if available.
Use the simple formula: length (ft) x width (ft) x depth (ft) divided by 27 to get cubic yards, then convert to tons if needed using the product-specific density or use Hello Gravel's material calculator. Add 5-10% extra for compaction, grading, and waste, and round up to the next convenient ordering amount. If you are unsure, request help from our team with your measurements and project type.
Regulations vary by property location, so check with Towner County offices or local township before major fills or changes that affect drainage, right-of-way, or setbacks. Small residential resurfacing projects often have fewer requirements, but large earthwork or changes to runoff patterns may need permits. When in doubt, contact the county planning or highway department for guidance before ordering.
Combining stable aggregates with vegetation, erosion control blankets, and proper grading is usually most effective for local slopes and seasonal runoff. Use coarser, stable materials where concentrated flow occurs and finer materials with seed or mulch on gentler slopes to establish vegetation. Consult local conservation or county resources for best practices tailored to your site.
Yes, prices vary by material type, local availability, haul distance, and volume ordered; some materials are typically less expensive per cubic yard than others, but regional sourcing can change that. Compare per-ton and per-cubic-yard pricing and factor in delivery and any hauling surcharges. Request a quote so you can evaluate total installed cost for your project.
Most contractors prefer late spring through early fall when the ground is thawed and weather is more predictable, which makes grading, compaction, and spreading easier. Deliveries can still occur in winter, but frozen ground and snow can limit site access and increase difficulty. Book early for peak season dates and be prepared to adjust for weather.
Drivers may be able to perform tailgate spreading at their discretion, and you can request the service at checkout, but there are no guarantees that spreading will be performed. For reliable spreading and compaction, plan for dedicated equipment and labor or hire a contractor. Clear drop instructions and an unobstructed site improve the chances of successful delivery and placement.
Contact Hello Gravel as soon as possible if you need to modify or cancel an order; changes are easier to accommodate before the order is dispatched. We will work with suppliers and haulers to try to accommodate requests, but modifications depend on processing status and supplier policies. For specific timing and potential fees, check your order confirmation or contact customer service.
