Local Insights
Thompson has a small, close-knit community with a city population of 2,240, and it sits within a much larger regional economy with a metro area population of 2.5+ million. A steady growth rate of 0.40% annually signals gradual, sustained demand for home improvements rather than a building boom — think steady increases in driveway repairs, garden upgrades, and small-scale additions rather than large subdivisions. Thompson’s climate (hardiness zone 8b, with 152 sunny days per year and 33.50 inches of annual rainfall) means homeowners need materials that handle both moisture and sun exposure. That combination favors well-graded base materials for stable surfaces, erosion-control mixes and soil amendments for planting beds, and durable surfacing for access roads. Because local geology affects color and texture, sourcing regionally consistent bulk materials helps ensure finished projects perform and look right for this area.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Choose based on expected traffic, drainage needs, and how much maintenance you want to do. In Thompson's climate, pick a durable, well-graded option and make sure you have a solid compacted base and good drainage to reduce frost heave. Use our material calculator and chat with our team to match your project to the right gravel, sand, dirt, stone mix. Remember minimum orders start at 3 tons.
Thompson has cold winters and freeze-thaw cycles that affect settling, compaction, and drainage. Local soil types and runoff patterns matter too, so choose materials and grading that promote drainage and resist frost heave. Because we source regionally, the gravel, sand, dirt, stone you receive may reflect local geology and perform best when matched to local conditions.
Plan outdoor deliveries between late spring and early fall when ground is workable to avoid frozen or waterlogged sites. Standard delivery takes 2+ business days and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. Schedule early in the season to avoid contractor bottlenecks and to allow time for settling before winter.
Common projects include driveways, patios, landscape beds, erosion control, paths, and simple grading or utility backfill. Each project may require different grades and depths, so match the material and quantity to the task. Use our online tools to translate project type into the right amount of gravel, sand, dirt, stone.
Measure the length, width, and desired depth of the area to get cubic feet, convert to cubic yards, then to tons if needed; our online calculator automates this for you. For common tasks we provide quantity guidelines, and remember our minimum order is 3 tons. Contact our sales team if you want a quick check for your project.
Deliveries are handled by local contracted haulers using dump trucks (typically tri-axle), so provide clear drop location and check site access for large trucks. Many areas qualify for free delivery, and you can choose your preferred delivery date at checkout. Drivers may offer tailgate spreading at their discretion, but this service is not guaranteed.
No, natural variation is normal because we source regionally and local geology affects color and texture. Expect some differences in the gravel, sand, dirt, stone you receive compared to photos and add color or texture preferences in the Order Notes if you have them. If a delivery seems significantly different than expected, contact customer service and we will work to resolve it.
Drivers may be able to perform tailgate spreading at their discretion and if site conditions allow, so request this option at checkout. The driver will assess safety and feasibility upon arrival; spreading is not guaranteed and is performed only when it can be done safely. For larger or precision spreading, consider hiring local contractors.
Contact our team as soon as possible — changes are easiest before your order is processed and dispatched. We will do our best to accommodate requests, but modifications depend on supplier and hauler schedules. See our order confirmation for contact options and timing details.
Freeze-thaw cycles can cause materials to clump, lock up with ice, or be harder to spread, so store stockpiles on higher, well-drained ground and cover them if possible. Plan deliveries when the ground is workable to simplify spreading and compaction, and allow extra time for settling in colder months. Proper site preparation and drainage reduce problems with the gravel, sand, dirt, stone over winter.
