Local Insights
Starkweather is a small community of 220 residents experiencing steady, incremental growth at 0.40% annually. That modest expansion means homeowner and small-scale contractor demand for basic construction and landscaping materials will grow gradually—think more driveway repairs, garden refreshes, and occasional property upgrades rather than large-scale development. The local climate (hardiness zone 8b, about 152 sunny days per year and 33.50 inches of annual rainfall) favors materials and mixes that balance drainage with erosion control: well-graded base materials for durable access, permeable top layers to manage runoff, and stable soils or amendments for planting. For homeowners, that translates to choosing aggregates, topsoil blends, and mulches that perform through wet periods and sunny stretches while reflecting the local geology and available regional materials.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Starkweather’s cold winters and seasonal freeze-thaw cycles can cause frost heave and shifting if materials are not installed properly. Choose well-draining materials and a compacted base, and grade for runoff to reduce water infiltration. Expect regional variation in texture and frost susceptibility, so plan for extra base depth and compaction in frost-prone areas.
Pick materials that drain well, resist freeze-thaw damage, and suit the intended use—load-bearing surfaces need stronger, well-graded base material while walking areas can be finished with finer aggregate. Because materials are regionally sourced, color and texture will vary; add preferences in Order Notes and ask our team for help matching function and look. Use products that compact reliably and maintain drainage to minimize maintenance.
Typical project examples: small walkway or garden bed often needs 1–3 tons, a small patio 2–6 tons, a one-car gravel driveway 15–40 tons, and a two-car driveway 30–80 tons depending on depth and subgrade. Hello Gravel’s material calculator can convert your dimensions into tons or cubic yards and our minimum order is 3 tons. When in doubt, measure area and depth and request a quote so we can help refine quantities for local conditions.
Good preparation includes removing organic topsoil where the base will go, grading surfaces to shed water away from structures, and compacting layers in 2–4 inch lifts until stable. Consider a geotextile fabric over soft spots and deeper base material in frost-prone zones. Proper slope, drainage outlets, and professional compaction greatly reduce long-term movement and maintenance.
Availability can dip in winter and demand often spikes in spring, which can extend lead times. Standard delivery is 2+ business days and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. We recommend ordering early in busy seasons and checking local supplier availability when planning large projects.
We deliver via contracted dump truck fleets, typically tri-axle trucks, with a minimum order of 3 tons. Standard delivery takes 2+ business days; next-day is available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. Drivers may perform tailgate spreading at their discretion if you request it at checkout, but spreading is not guaranteed and depends on safety and site access.
Rural deliveries can be subject to county road weight limits, bridge restrictions, or local permitting for large loads on narrow roads. Check with local county or township public works if you have questions about access, and tell us about narrow drives or low overhead so we can plan the right truck. If special permits are required, arrange them before delivery and notify our team when you order.
Areas with heavy clay or poor drainage need a permeable base and extra depth to prevent water buildup and frost heave; well-draining aggregates and proper subgrade prep are important. For sites with standing water, consider improving drainage before placing materials or using coarser, free-draining material as part of the design. Our team can advise on material blends that work best for local soil conditions.
Many suppliers provide delivery-only as the standard service and may offer spreading for an extra fee or at the driver’s discretion. Request spreading at checkout and note that crews will assess safety, access, and equipment before agreeing to spread. If spreading is critical, discuss options with our team when you order so we can match you with the right hauler and service level.
Prices vary by season, material type, and local supply; regional sourcing means texture, color, and cost reflect nearby geology and hauling distance. Get an upfront quote for your zip code and project size—Hello Gravel shows transparent pricing and many areas qualify for free delivery. For budgeting, ask about recommended alternatives that meet performance needs while fitting your price range.
Contractors often prefer a well-graded, compactable base material and permeable surfacing to promote drainage and reduce frost movement. They also commonly use geotextile separation over poor subsoils and compact in layers to reach a stable surface. Discuss your project goals with local pros or our team so you get a build-up that balances durability, cost, and maintenance.
Contact Hello Gravel as soon as possible if you need to change or cancel an order; modifications are easiest before the supplier begins processing. We will do our best to accommodate requests, but changes depend on timing and truck scheduling. Check our order confirmation for full instructions and reach customer service for help.
