Local Insights
Selfridge is a small but steadily developing community with a city population of 310 and connections to a wider metro area population of 2.5+ million. A growth rate of 0.40% annually points to modest, steady demand for home upkeep, small additions, and incremental construction—work that drives consistent need for bulk materials. Located in hardiness zone 8b with about 152 sunny days per year and roughly 33.50 inches of annual rainfall, the local climate favors materials that balance drainage with moisture retention. Homeowners here benefit from aggregates, soils, and mulches that resist erosion in wetter periods, provide stable support for driveways and patios, and help plantings thrive across seasonal moisture swings. Whether tackling grading, drainage, landscaping beds, or driveway repairs, sourcing quality, regionally appropriate bulk supplies matters for durability, cost control, and predictable project outcomes.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Choose materials based on traffic, drainage, and appearance. For most driveways and walkways in Selfridge, homeowners pick a stable base combined with a durable surface material; gravel, sand, dirt, stone are commonly used together rather than alone. Consider load (cars vs foot traffic), local freeze-thaw cycles, and how much maintenance you want. Use our material calculator or contact our team for a recommendation tailored to your project size and budget.
Look for materials that drain well and resist frost heave. Coarser, angular materials that shed water and a properly compacted base reduce freeze-thaw damage; combining drainage layers with a top surface suited to your use is often best. Also factor in slope, local soil, and seasonal wet periods when planning. If unsure, request guidance from our team about materials sourced for your area.
Delivery cost depends on material type, quantity, distance from the supplier, and site access. Hello Gravel provides transparent quotes based on your zip code and order details; note our minimum order is typically 3 tons and next-day delivery carries an extra fee. For an accurate estimate, request a quote through the website or contact customer service with your project address and quantity needs.
Many local suppliers will deliver to rural and construction sites, but access and road conditions matter. Large dump trucks need room to turn and a safe place to dump; narrow lanes, low bridges, gates, or soft road shoulders can limit delivery options. Tell us about site access during checkout and include delivery notes so we can confirm whether a delivery is possible or suggest alternate drop locations.
Schedule at least 2 business days ahead for standard delivery, and earlier during peak landscaping seasons. Next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee, but we recommend booking sooner to secure your preferred date. If you need to change an order, contact us as soon as possible; changes are easier before dispatch.
Effective erosion control usually combines heavier surface material to hold the slope, a drainage layer to move water away, and vegetation or blankets to stabilize soil. Using a heavier stone or coarse material at the toe of a slope and lighter cover above, plus proper grading and drainage, helps reduce washouts. Local soil and rainfall patterns affect choices, so plan with both materials and landscaping in mind.
Quantity depends on area size, desired depth, and material density, which varies by type. For a quick estimate, measure the length and width of the area and the target depth, then use our online material calculator or contact our team for help converting to tons. We can also advise on waste and compaction allowances so you order the right amount without excess.
Permit requirements vary by county, township, and any homeowners association. Deliveries alone often do not need permits, but creating a new driveway, changing drainage, or major land disturbance might. Check with local authorities before work begins and mention permit needs when ordering so we and your supplier can plan accordingly.
Contractors should include site access, haul distance, material type, labor for spreading and compaction, and any disposal or grading work. Seasonal factors like frozen ground or muddy access can increase time and cost. Hello Gravel provides materials and scheduled delivery, but installation labor and equipment are typically contractor responsibilities; share delivery details ahead of time to avoid delays.
Choose coarser materials when you need drainage, stability, and resistance to frost; finer materials are useful for leveling and creating a smooth surface but can retain moisture. Many projects use layered systems: a coarser base for drainage and support, with a finer finish layer for appearance or compaction. Consider intended use, winter conditions, and maintenance when making your choice, and ask our team for guidance based on local sourcing and performance.
Because we source regionally, texture and color can vary from photos; this is normal with natural materials. If you need to change an order, contact our team as soon as possible—changes are easiest before processing and dispatch. For issues after delivery, reach out to customer service promptly so we can work with you and the supplier to find a satisfactory solution.
