Local Insights
Saint Thomas is a small but steadily growing community with a city population of 410 and connections into a larger regional economy with a metro area population of 2.5+ million. A growth rate of 0.40% annually points to gradual, sustained demand for home improvement and light construction rather than sudden spikes — homeowners should expect steady increases in landscaping, driveway repairs, and small-scale builds over time. With annual rainfall of 33.50 inches, 152 sunny days per year, and a hardiness zone of 8b, local projects must balance moisture management and sun exposure: materials that promote good drainage, resist erosion, and support plantings adapted to zone 8b are especially useful. Whether you are preparing beds, building paths, or topping driveways, using properly graded, regionally sourced bulk materials reduces rework and improves long-term performance.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Choose materials that promote drainage and resist movement during freeze-thaw cycles. Look for well-graded, compactable aggregates that shed water and provide a stable base; our team can point you to options in the gravel, sand, dirt, stone group that suit your slope and use. Consider top layer texture, local availability, and whether you need a hard, compact surface or a looser finish for landscaping.
Measure the area in feet, multiply by planned depth in feet, then divide by 27 to get cubic yards (length x width x depth / 27). Most aggregates weigh roughly 1.2 to 1.6 tons per cubic yard depending on type and moisture, so use our online material calculator or contact our sales team to convert to tons and confirm quantities. We recommend ordering a little extra for compaction and final grading.
Hello Gravel requires a minimum order of 3 tons, and most rural deliveries are handled by tri-axle dump trucks. Delivery windows depend on local haulers and road access; confirm availability for your zip code and expect standard lead times rather than guaranteed same-day service. Get a tailored quote to see any delivery fees, free delivery promotions, or next-day options.
Standard delivery is typically 2+ business days from order confirmation, and next-day delivery may be available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. We confirm delivery details with you before dispatch but cannot guarantee exact times due to local hauler schedules and weather. In winter or during peak season, allow extra lead time.
Yes. Deliveries are subject to access limits like narrow driveways, low-hanging wires, weight-restricted roads, and tight turns that prevent large dump trucks from reaching the drop spot. Please note any obstacles in the Order Notes and, if possible, provide photos so haulers can plan. Drivers may need to offload on the street or at a safe nearby location if direct access is not possible.
In Saint Thomas' climate, materials that drain well and compact consistently perform best through freeze-thaw cycles. Proper base preparation, slope for runoff, and avoiding fine, water-retaining mixes at low elevations reduce frost heave. Ask our team for recommendations that balance drainage, durability, and the look you want from the gravel, sand, dirt, stone group.
Possibly. Permits or rules may be required for placing materials on public right-of-way, blocking streets during delivery, or altering drainage patterns. Check with the City of Saint Thomas and your county or HOA before ordering, and let us know if you need material placed near property lines or public roads so we can advise on safe delivery options. Our customer service can remind you to verify any local permitting needs.
Drivers may be able to perform tailgate spreading at their discretion, but this service is not guaranteed and depends on safety, truck capacity, and site conditions. You can request spreading at checkout and we will pass the request to the hauler, who will assess feasibility upon arrival. For precise spreading or grading, we recommend hiring a local contractor or asking for a referral.
Peak delivery times are usually spring through early fall, so plan projects and book materials early to secure preferred dates. Winter deliveries in North Dakota can be limited by snow, frozen ground, and road restrictions, and weather may delay arrival. Place orders with extra lead time during seasonal transitions and confirm delivery windows ahead of busy periods.
Many local suppliers and haulers focus on material delivery and do not perform full installation, but they often can recommend contractors or crews who handle spreading, grading, and compaction. Hello Gravel connects customers to local suppliers and can help point you toward installers in the West North Dakota area upon request. If you prefer DIY, we provide calculators and guidance to estimate materials and plan deliveries.
