Local Insights
Lehr is a small community with a city population of 190 located inside a larger West North Dakota metro area of 2.5+ million, and it is growing steadily at a 0.40% annual rate. That kind of gradual growth usually drives steady homeowner activity — incremental property upgrades, driveway repairs, garden improvements, and modest new construction — rather than large-scale development. Local climate and geography matter: average annual rainfall of 33.50 inches combined with about 152 sunny days per year and a hardiness zone of 8b creates mixed moisture and sun exposure that affects material performance. Homeowners need a range of materials — from durable base rock and sand for drainage to screened topsoil and mulches for planting — and sourcing quality, regionally appropriate bulk materials helps ensure projects last through both wet periods and sunny stretches.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Locally sourced gravel, sand, dirt, and stone are the common choices for driveways, walkways, and landscape beds. Choose based on your priorities: durability and compaction for driveways, drainage and finish for walkways and beds, and ease of maintenance for larger landscape areas. Consider expected traffic, slope and drainage needs, and desired appearance; our material quiz or sales team can help match options to your project.
Calculate the volume by multiplying length x width x depth in feet and dividing by 27 to get cubic yards, or use Hello Gravel’s material calculator for an instant estimate. As a rule of thumb, determine the finished depth you need (for example, a compacted base vs a surface layer) and add a small allowance for compaction and waste. Keep in mind our minimum order is 3 tons and regional densities vary, so check the calculator and request a quote for precise amounts.
Freeze-thaw cycles can cause frost heave and surface movement if materials don’t drain or compact well. Choose materials and installation methods that promote drainage, use a well-compacted base, and avoid fine, water-retaining fills in frost-prone areas. Proper grading, edge restraint, and periodic maintenance reduce winter damage and help surfaces last longer in Lehr’s climate.
Spring and summer (after frost) are the most common seasons for delivering and installing bulk materials because conditions are drier and compacting is easier. Fall can work for many projects, but watch for early freeze; winter deliveries are sometimes possible but may be limited by access, frozen ground, or spreading restrictions. Plan ahead and use our scheduling options to pick a delivery date that fits local weather patterns.
Most local suppliers and contracted haulers will deliver to rural addresses near Lehr, but you should confirm access details before ordering. Be ready to provide gate codes, clear instructions for long drives or narrow lanes, and note any low-hanging wires, soft shoulders, or bridge/weight limits. If access is tight, consider a nearby staging location or a shorter truck drop; communicate these conditions in Order Notes at checkout.
Standard delivery is scheduled for 2+ business days, and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. Our minimum order is 3 tons; delivery fees vary by distance, site access, and local supplier policies, and free delivery is available in many areas. You can choose a preferred delivery date during checkout and request tailgate spreading, but drivers perform spreading at their discretion and it is not guaranteed.
Focus on how the material will perform under expected use: good drainage and proper base preparation are key to durability, while material size and texture affect how much maintenance you’ll need. For areas with vehicle traffic choose materials that compact well and resist displacement; for planting beds and walkways prioritize drainage and appearance. Regular maintenance like raking, topping up low spots, and keeping grades away from structures will extend the life of any material.
Total cost depends on material quantity, site preparation (grading, excavation, disposal), compaction, edge treatments, and labor or contractor fees. Small yard projects can cost a few hundred dollars while full driveway builds often run into the thousands; exact costs vary widely by scope and contractor rates. Get multiple quotes, include contingency for unexpected site work, and use our material calculator to estimate material-only costs before adding installation expenses.
Some projects require city, county, or HOA approvals—common items include driveway approach permits, road right-of-way rules, and local erosion or drainage requirements. Rules vary, so contact the City of Lehr or Logan County and your HOA (if applicable) before ordering large deliveries or altering curbs and slopes. Hello Gravel can help with delivery logistics but cannot determine permit needs for you.
Ask about material gradation and suitability for frost-prone conditions, compaction and base recommendations, expected maintenance, and how the material performs in local prairie weather. Confirm delivery details like truck size, placement options, access needs, and any additional fees for spreading. Finally, request references or photos of similar local projects and get a written estimate that separates material, delivery, and installation costs.
Contact Hello Gravel as soon as possible—changes are easiest to make before an order is dispatched and we’ll do our best to accommodate requests. If there’s an issue on delivery, document it with photos and contact customer service promptly so we can work with the local supplier and hauler to resolve it. Remember that drivers may be able to perform tailgate spreading at their discretion, but spreading is not guaranteed.
