Local Insights
Hamar is home to 90,000 residents. With a steady annual growth rate of 0.40%, development pressure is consistent rather than explosive, which means homeowners can expect ongoing demand for maintenance and incremental projects—driveway repairs, yard regrading, drainage improvements, and patio or garden upgrades—rather than sudden large-scale building booms. Being part of a broader metro area of 2.5+ million supports access to a wider supplier network and contractor expertise. Hamar’s climate—152 sunny days and 33.50 inches of annual rainfall in hardiness zone 8b—creates a need to balance moisture management with plant-friendly soils. That mix makes quality bulk materials (dirt, sand, mulch, stone, and engineered aggregates) important: the right blends improve drainage, reduce erosion, support plantings, and lower long-term maintenance in local yards and small construction sites. Moderate rainfall combined with many sunny days means materials must handle both wet periods and drying spells; that affects compaction, settling, and erosion control. Local soil and geology influence how quickly fills settle and how well surfaces drain, so material performance in place matters as much as specs on paper. For homeowners in Hamar, this means choosing materials that match local conditions and installation methods that reduce future repairs. Hello Gravel helps by connecting you to regional suppliers, offering quantity calculators and scheduling tools, and providing expert guidance so you can select and time deliveries to suit Hamar’s seasonal patterns and project goals.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

You can order a variety of bulk aggregates including gravel, sand, dirt, stone and other common materials used for yards, driveways, backfill, and drainage. Materials are sourced locally so texture and color can vary based on regional geology. Use our online catalog or contact the sales team to find options that match your project's needs.
Pick materials that promote drainage and resist frost heave—well-draining aggregates paired with proper base layers are commonly used for driveways and walkways. For planting areas or lawns choose topsoil or screened mixes that hold moisture but still drain. If you are unsure, use our material quiz or contact our team for guidance based on your project and local conditions.
Hello Gravel requires a 3-ton minimum order. Standard delivery typically takes 2+ business days, and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. Deliveries are made by local contracted dump truck fleets (usually tri-axle); tailgate spreading may be available at the driver's discretion but is not guaranteed.
Many local suppliers and haulers will deliver to rural addresses near Hamar, but availability depends on your zip code and local access. Factors like unpaved roads, narrow driveways, low-hanging wires, bridge or weight limits, and long haul distances can affect whether delivery is possible or if extra fees apply. Enter your zip code at checkout and share access details so we can confirm serviceability.
Measure the area (length x width x depth) to get cubic yards and convert to tons using our online material calculator for a quick estimate. If you prefer, provide project dimensions and a brief description and our team can estimate amounts for you. Always add 5-10% extra for waste, compaction, or grading adjustments.
Spring through fall is generally the easiest time to deliver and install material because ground conditions are more favorable. Winter deliveries are possible but frozen ground, snow, and shorter daylight can limit spreading and compaction and may increase lead times. Plan ahead for busy spring seasons and book earlier if you need next-day or scheduled-date delivery.
Permit requirements vary by project type and by city or county rules. Small landscaping deliveries usually do not require permits, but larger fill, grading, or changes that affect drainage, wetlands, or septic systems may need approval. Check with Hamar city hall or Barnes County zoning before ordering if your project involves significant grading or new fill.
Prices vary across West North Dakota based on local material availability and haul distance from suppliers. Rural or remote deliveries typically cost more because of longer truck travel. The best way to compare is to enter your zip code for an exact price or request multiple quotes for your area.
Contractors usually order larger volumes, require faster turnaround, and coordinate staging and heavy equipment, while DIY homeowners often need help calculating quantities and selecting simpler mixes. Both should confirm delivery access, specify if tailgate spreading is requested, and plan for compaction or finishing work after delivery. Contractors may also negotiate recurring delivery schedules or larger loads for efficiency.
Standard orders typically deliver in 2+ business days, but specialty materials or very large volumes can require extra lead time depending on supplier stock and hauling distance. Lead times can range from several days to a few weeks, so contact our team early for scheduling and availability for large or uncommon materials.
Clear a drop zone and mark the preferred dump location with stakes or cones, remove low-hanging branches or obstacles, and provide gate codes or a phone contact for the driver. Make sure there is legal parking space for a large truck and confirm any weight-restricted roads on the route. Proper prep reduces delays and minimizes risk of material being dumped in the wrong spot.
