Local Insights
Halliday is a small but regionally connected community of 720 residents that sits within a much larger metro context of 2.5+ million people. A steady growth rate of 0.40% annually points to gradual, predictable increases in housing upkeep and modest new construction rather than sudden booms — that means steady demand for basic site-preparation and landscaping materials over time. The local climate (152 sunny days and 33.50 inches of annual rainfall) and hardiness zone 8b combine to create a seasonal, yet generally moderate, weather pattern: expect wet periods that demand reliable drainage and dry stretches that influence plant establishment. For homeowners that translates into a need for a range of quality bulk materials — from durable base mixes and washed sand for grading to topsoil blends and mulches for planting — all sourced to suit local geology and weather patterns.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Homeowners and contractors in Halliday commonly order a mix of gravel, sand, dirt, and stone for driveways, landscaping, drainage projects, and foundations. Local jobs often call for base material for driveways, top dressing for yards, and screened dirt for grading or planting beds. Regional sourcing means color and texture can vary, so ask for local descriptions when ordering.
Start by thinking about the function: drainage, load-bearing, or aesthetics. For example, choose materials that compact well for bases, and more decorative textures for top layers; consider particle size and permeability to manage water. If you are unsure, use Hello Gravel's material quiz or contact our team for guidance on what works best in Halliday's climate.
Measure the length, width, and desired depth in feet, multiply them, then divide by 27 to get cubic yards (length x width x depth / 27). For larger projects or to convert to tons, use Hello Gravel's online calculator or call our sales team; regional material density varies so we provide estimates based on local materials. Remember our minimum order is 3 tons, so plan quantities accordingly.
Deliveries are typically made with dump trucks, often tri-axle trucks, which are suitable for most rural properties. Standard delivery is 2+ business days, with a next-day option for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. Let us know about narrow roads, gates, or low-hanging wires in Order Notes so drivers and haulers can plan access.
Yes. North Dakota freeze/thaw cycles, snow, and muddy spring conditions can affect delivery timing and material performance. The best months for most outdoor deliveries and installations are late spring through early fall, but local weather varies year to year—schedule early and allow flexibility. If winter delivery is needed, expect possible delays or additional handling fees.
Local regulations, county road rules, and HOA covenants can affect where materials can be dumped and whether permits are required. Check with Halliday city offices, Mercer County, or your HOA before ordering, especially for curbside dumps, road closures, or large deliveries. Tell Hello Gravel about any permit requirements when you order so we can help coordinate with suppliers and haulers.
For Halliday's climate, drainage, compaction, and resistance to freeze-thaw movement are most important. Choose materials with appropriate particle sizes and angularity for compaction where structural support is needed, and more permeable mixes where drainage is a priority. Our team can recommend materials that balance these needs given local geology and project type.
Prices vary by material type, local supplier, distance from the quarry, and seasonal demand, so exact rates change by zip code. Hello Gravel shows transparent pricing when you enter your zip code and request a quote, which includes delivery estimates and any fees. Use the checkout quote or contact our sales team for a custom estimate for Halliday-area projects.
Some contractors offer full supply-and-place services including spreading and compaction, while others only accept delivered materials and handle installation separately. Many homeowners hire local landscapers or earthwork contractors for grading and compaction after delivery. If you need spreading or installation, ask your contractor or request recommendations from Hello Gravel when you order.
Provide clear access instructions, gate codes, preferred drop location, and note any obstacles like low branches, narrow lanes, or soft shoulders. Request tailgate spreading at checkout if you want it, understanding the driver will assess safety and may decline. Contact customer service ASAP if conditions change or you need to modify the order before dispatch.
