Local Insights
Fort Totten homeowners work within a compact community with a city population of 1,704, yet are connected to a much larger regional market with a metro area population of 2.5+ million. The steady growth rate of 0.40% annually suggests gradual increases in home improvement and small-scale construction activity rather than sudden spikes, which typically translates to ongoing demand for everyday bulk materials—driveway stone, fill dirt, landscaping soil, and sand—over time. Local climate and geography drive specific material choices: roughly 152 sunny days per year combined with 33.50 inches of annual rainfall in hardiness zone 8b means projects must handle both intense wet periods and extended sunny stretches. That mix raises the importance of well-graded aggregates for drainage, stable base materials for driving surfaces, and blended soils for plantings to reduce maintenance and extend performance across seasons.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Fort Totten experiences freeze-thaw cycles and cold winters that can affect compaction, drainage, and settling. Choose materials and installation methods that accommodate frost movement and spring thaw—for example well-graded base materials and good drainage layers—and allow for extra settling when calculating quantities. Expect delays for work during deep freeze or muddy spring conditions and plan accordingly.
Most suppliers serving Fort Totten use dump trucks (typically tri-axle) for bulk deliveries and require a minimum order (Hello Gravel minimum is 3 tons). Standard delivery timing is 2+ business days, with a next-day option for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. Drivers may offer tailgate spreading at their discretion, but this is not guaranteed.
Delivery radius varies by supplier and local haulers; rural deliveries can have longer drive times and occasional extra fees for remote locations. Road conditions, seasonal access (snow or spring mud), and local load schedules all affect availability and timing. Check zip code coverage and provide clear drop locations to speed coordination.
Prices vary with material type, regional supply, and haul distance, but rural North Dakota ranges commonly fall within a modest per-ton or per-cubic-yard band. As a rough guide, expect variability rather than exact quotes; use our site to get a local price or request a quote for your zip code to see current rates. Hello Gravel shows transparent pricing and handles local supplier coordination to provide accurate estimates.
For driveways, patios, and basic grading, choose stable, well-graded base materials and a surface layer suited to traffic and aesthetics; for drainage or erosion control, select coarser, open-graded mixes and consider geotextile separation. Landscaping beds and topsoil applications need clean, workable dirt or mixes that support planting. Use our material quiz and calculator to match material types to your project and quantity needs.
Local regulations vary and Fort Totten may have county, municipal, HOA, or tribal rules affecting permit needs, setbacks, or right-of-way work. Before starting significant grading, driveway replacement, or changes that affect drainage, check with Benson County, the city, and any tribal authority or HOA that applies to your property. When in doubt, contact local planning offices to confirm requirements.
Demand peaks in spring and summer for landscaping and construction, which can increase lead times and reduce next-day availability. Plan major projects early, allowing extra time during busy seasons; standard delivery is usually 2+ business days but advance booking helps secure preferred dates. Winter months may have limited availability due to road and weather constraints.
Materials that promote permeability and structural stability—such as open-graded stone mixes, coarser aggregates, and well-compacted base layers—tend to perform best for drainage and erosion control. Combining proper slope grading, geotextile fabric, and the right aggregate blend helps reduce washout and settling. Local soil conditions and site slope will influence the exact selection, so consider a site inspection or expert advice for larger jobs.
Schedule deliveries for drier periods when possible and allow buffer days for spring thaw or sudden winter weather; confirm delivery windows and drop locations before the truck arrives. Order materials with the minimum lead time that still provides flexibility and include clear order notes for access, preferred staging areas, and contact info. If you need on-site spreading, request it at checkout but expect the driver to assess safety and feasibility on arrival.
