Local Insights
Kerhonkson is home to 4,170 residents, and with a modest population growth of 0.40% annually the local construction and renovation market tends toward steady, predictable demand rather than boom-cycle spikes. That steadiness means homeowners and small contractors often prioritize incremental upgrades—driveway repairs, hardscape improvements, garden refreshes, and targeted drainage work—over large-scale new subdivisions. The local climate and geography shape those needs: the area sees 228/year sunny days and receives 33.50 inches of annual rainfall, and it falls in hardiness zone 8b. Those conditions favor materials that balance drainage and moisture retention—stable base mixes for paths and driveways, well-structured soils for planting beds, and erosion-control aggregates for sloped sites. Choosing quality bulk materials helps reduce long-term maintenance, improve durability, and support healthier plantings across Kerhonkson properties.

Hello Gravel found me while I was looking for dirt to fill a hole that opened up in my back yard. I originally searched on DirtMatch and when I spoke with Chuck I was originally quoted for 1 ton of dirt. After showing pictures it turned out I needed less than half of that. Chuck talked me through the process of picking the right soil, how to fill the hole, and where to get what I needed from the Lowes local to me. Uploaded pictures of how we found it, after we dug out all the overhang and cleaned it out, and after we filled it in. I saved $400 by talking with Chuck and it only took like 3 hours. I wasn't even an official customer and Chuck took the time to help me with the hole in my yard. And on a weekend no less!!! What I'm saying is if you're looking for honest, kind, caring people to help you with your job. From my experience, this is the place.

Hello Gravel requires a minimum order of 3 tons and typically schedules standard deliveries in 2+ business days. Next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee, but availability depends on local suppliers and trucking. Always check zip code availability and choose a preferred delivery date at checkout.
Start by matching the material to the job: consider load, drainage, appearance, and maintenance needs. For most projects, assess options like gravel, sand, dirt, stone together rather than a single product, then use our material calculator or talk to our team for guidance. Regional sourcing means appearance and texture can vary, so request notes at checkout if color or grade matters.
Freeze-thaw cycles can cause heaving and drainage problems if materials and subbase are not chosen carefully. Use well-draining aggregates and a compacted base to reduce movement, and avoid using only fine material for wearing surfaces where freeze-thaw is common. Proper drainage and correct installation are more important than any single material choice.
Soil type, property slope, existing drainage, and expected load (foot traffic vs vehicles) are the main local factors. Wet or clay soils may need more drainage and thicker base layers, while steep slopes require erosion control measures and different particle sizes. Consider an on-site assessment or photos to help select the right mix of materials.
Spring through fall is generally the easiest time for deliveries and installation because the ground is not frozen and crews can compact and grade properly. Deliveries are possible year-round, but winter can bring delays, limited spreading ability, and higher costs. Plan ahead for peak seasons and check local road conditions during heavy weather.
Permits and rules vary by town, especially for new driveways, changes to stormwater drainage, or work near wetlands. Check with the Kerhonkson/Ulster County building or zoning office before starting a project to confirm permit requirements. Hello Gravel can deliver materials, but it cannot advise on or obtain local permits for you.
Delivery pricing usually includes distance, truck size, and any access difficulties, while pickup may save on hauling costs but requires an appropriate vehicle and time. In rural areas like Kerhonkson, delivery is often the more practical option because suppliers and haulers handle loading and dumping. Use our pricing and calculator tools to compare total cost for delivery versus pickup.
On slopes, prioritize managing water before selecting surface materials: add swales, adequate drainage aggregate layers, and erosion control fabric or vegetation where needed. Choose coarser materials that lock together and resist washout for the surface, and plan for retaining features if grades are steep. Consult a contractor for larger slopes or where stormwater may affect neighbors.
Delivery access can limit truck size and require specialized haulers, which may increase cost or add lead time. Provide clear notes about narrow roads, low bridges, steep driveways, or turnaround limitations at checkout so suppliers can plan the right truck. In some cases, smaller trucks or partial loads will be recommended to safely deliver materials.
Typical guidance is to install a compacted base layer of 4-8 inches for driveways and 4-6 inches for patios or walkways, with a 1-4 inch wearing or bedding layer depending on the finish material. For drainage trenches or French drains, a 4-6 inch bed of coarse aggregate is often used. Use our material calculator to convert these depths into tonnage for your specific area and project dimensions.
Tailgate spreading may be available at the driver's discretion; request it at checkout and note that drivers will assess safety and feasibility on arrival. To change or cancel an order, contact our team as soon as possible — we will do our best to accommodate requests before the order is dispatched. Changes are easier to make earlier in the process and are not guaranteed after dispatch.
Natural materials reflect local geology, so texture and color can vary from photos or samples. If the material differs from your expectations, contact customer service promptly and we will work to resolve the issue per our policies. For visual preferences, include color or texture notes at checkout to help suppliers match your needs.
