Local Insights
Matawan is home to 29,670 residents and sits within a broader metro area of 2.5+ million people—conditions that support steady but not explosive demand for residential and small-scale commercial projects. A growth rate of 1.20% annually points to incremental development: more yard renovations, driveway repairs, patio installs, and infill building rather than a large wave of new subdivisions. Local climate and geography shape material choices too: 228 sunny days per year combined with an annual rainfall of 34.32 inches and hardiness zone 8b means homeowners see alternating dry and wet periods and a relatively long growing season. Those conditions drive demand for a range of bulk materials—topsoil, compost, mulch, sand, and various aggregates—so yards drain properly, planting beds establish quickly, and hardscapes stay stable. In this environment, consistent, regionally sourced materials with predictable gradation and moisture content matter because they affect compaction, drainage, and plant performance across seasons.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Pick a material based on what the project needs: drainage, compaction, appearance, or fill. For most residential jobs, consider how the material will perform in local conditions (freeze/thaw and rain), how it compacts, and whether you need a decorative look or structural base. Use our material quiz and calculator to compare options for gravel, sand, dirt, stone and get a tailored recommendation.
Common projects include driveways, patios and paver bases, grading and fill, drainage improvements, erosion control, and garden or lawn work. Each project prefers different properties—some need good drainage, others need a stable compacted base—so choose a material that fits the project goals rather than a single u0022bestu0022 product.
Use our online calculator for the most accurate estimate. As a quick rule of thumb, 1 inch of material over 100 square feet is about 0.3 cubic yards, and 1 cubic yard typically weighs roughly 1 to 1.6 tons depending on the material. Order 5-10% extra to allow for compaction and grading.
Matawan experiences freeze/thaw cycles and varied precipitation that affect delivery and performance. Schedule major deliveries outside heavy rain or freeze events when possible, protect stored materials from runoff, and plan compaction and installation during milder, drier windows for best results.
Standard delivery typically takes 2 or more business days, and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. Minimum order is 3 tons, deliveries are made by contracted dump truck fleets (usually tri-axle), and you can select a preferred date at checkout.
Access varies by neighborhood and lot layout; standard dump trucks need clear turning space and stable ground. As a general guideline allow about 12 feet of clear width and 13-14 feet of vertical clearance for standard trucks, and alert us to obstacles like low wires, narrow drives, or weight limits so we can arrange a smaller truck or alternate drop location if needed.
Small residential deliveries often don’t require permits, but larger jobs or street/curb impacts can. Check with Matawan borough or the county for curb cut, right-of-way, blocking the street, or construction permits, and ask us if you expect a street closure or oversized load so we can coordinate with local haulers.
No — materials reflect local geology and can vary in color, texture, and sizing. You can add color or appearance preferences in Order Notes, but regional sourcing and natural variation mean exact matches cannot be guaranteed.
Drivers may provide tailgate spreading at their discretion, but this service is not guaranteed and depends on safety and site conditions. Request spreading in checkout notes and the driver will assess on arrival; for guaranteed spreading, consider hiring a local contractor.
Price is influenced by material type, the number of tons, distance from the supplier, site access challenges, special handling, and seasonal demand. Get an instant quote through our site or contact our team for a detailed estimate and reminders about the minimum order and any delivery fees.
Contact our customer team as soon as possible — changes are most easily handled before the order is dispatched. We will do our best to accommodate requests, but modifications after dispatch or after the trucking company is scheduled may be limited.
Plan for larger volumes, coordinated delivery windows, and documentation like weight tickets and invoices. Communicate project specs, required gradations, and access constraints up front so we can match you with suppliers and haulers experienced in West New Jersey conditions.
Document the issue with photos and contact our customer service promptly so we can investigate and work toward a resolution. We will coordinate with local suppliers and haulers and follow our issue-resolution process as described in our policy.
