Local Insights
Dennis, New Jersey, is a small but active community with a city population of 182 and ties to a larger metro area of 2.5+ million. A steady growth rate of 1.20% annually means incremental housing updates and landscaping projects are common rather than large-scale booms — homeowners typically undertake gradual property improvements, driveways, garden renovations, and modest hardscaping over time. With 228 sunny days and 34.32 inches of annual rainfall in hardiness zone 8b, local projects must balance sun exposure with periodic rain: that increases the need for materials that manage drainage and soil stability while also resisting UV breakdown. For Dennis homeowners, reliable bulk supplies — from soil and sand to mulch, stone, and gravel — support everything from erosion control and drainage trenches to planting beds and pathways. Choosing the right mix of materials helps projects last longer in this climate and complements the steady local demand for quality, practical solutions.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Homeowners and contractors in Dennis commonly order a range of bulk materials such as gravel, sand, dirt, stone and mixed aggregates for driveways, patios, garden beds, drainage and grading. These materials serve as base layers, surface layers, or fill depending on the project. Choose materials based on load, drainage needs and desired appearance.
Pick materials that match your project's purpose: stable, angular aggregates for driveways and paths; finer materials for leveling or planting beds; and more permeable mixes for drainage areas. Consider local conditions like sandy soils, salt exposure and storm runoff when selecting a material. If you are unsure, use our material quiz or contact our team for guidance.
Measure the length, width and desired depth of the area to get a volume in cubic feet, then divide by 27 to convert to cubic yards. For weight estimates, 1 cubic yard typically ranges from about 1.2 to 1.6 tons depending on the material and moisture content, so confirm with your supplier for an exact conversion. Use our online calculator or contact our team with your dimensions for help.
Season and weather affect deliveries and installation: avoid very wet or frozen ground when possible because heavy trucks can cause rutting and freeze-thaw can affect compaction. Coastal storms and high tides can also delay or limit access during certain times of year. We recommend scheduling deliveries during drier months and allowing extra lead time in storm seasons.
Some projects require local permits or approvals, especially if work affects wetlands, stormwater, septic systems or property elevations. HOA rules, local zoning and coastal or conservation regulations can also set limits on fill and surfaces. Check with Dennis township offices or your contractor before ordering large volumes to confirm any required permits.
Standard delivery is typically available in 2 or more business days, and next-day delivery is an option for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. Hello Gravel has a minimum order of 3 tons and schedules deliveries with local haulers; you can choose a preferred date on checkout. Tailgate spreading may be requested at checkout but is performed at the driver's discretion and is not guaranteed.
Delivery fees and minimums can vary based on distance, access difficulty and local restrictions; Hello Gravel’s standard minimum is 3 tons, and many areas qualify for free delivery but some locations may incur extra charges. Restricted-access streets, long driveways, or locations requiring permits or escort vehicles can add fees. Get a quote during checkout to see any location-specific charges.
Common obstacles include narrow residential streets, low-hanging wires or tree limbs, beach or dune access limits, seasonal weight restrictions on local roads and any HOA or permit requirements. Providing detailed access notes and photos at checkout helps haulers plan the best route and equipment. Our dispatch team will review site details and contact you if there are concerns.
Materials that promote drainage and resist washout—such as angular crushed aggregates combined with coarser layers—are often best for erosion control and improved drainage in coastal/plain soils. Combining different sizes (a stable base and a more permeable top layer) helps shed water while reducing movement during storms. Local suppliers can recommend blends tailored to Dennis soil and flood risk conditions.
Maintenance depends on material and use: light landscaping surfaces may need topping up every 1–3 years, while well-compacted driveway bases can last longer but may need spot repairs after heavy storms or freeze-thaw cycles. Routine tasks include regrading low spots, removing weeds, and replenishing surface material as needed. Inspect surfaces after major storms and schedule repairs promptly to avoid larger fixes.
Many local contractors prefer direct bulk delivery because it is efficient and reduces handling, but some contractors arrange their own hauling or combine vendor deliveries depending on project logistics. Hello Gravel connects customers to local suppliers and contracted haulers to fit either approach. For large or phased jobs, coordinate timing and access requirements in advance to avoid delays.
Contact our customer service as soon as possible—changes are easiest to accommodate before the order is dispatched. Natural materials can vary regionally in color and texture, so variations from photos are common; if a delivered material is substantially different, contact us and we will work to resolve the issue per our policies.
